Whenever I start my disco, or if I had my disco running and leave it .. It cranks for about 5-10 seconds and i HAVE to depress gas peddle and finally starts ruffly. I get a big cloud of white smoke in the morning after starting. When it was running already and I start it usually I get a real ruff start. Any help? |

Rule out problems with fuel pump & filter... but sounds like you might have some injector issues, they get worn and do hold the pressure from the fuel rail. A pretty easy test & fix though. Pull the injectors off and take to any diesel injector shop to test and possibly rebuild... should only be about $35 an injector to rebuild... LR will charge you a fortune so find a diesel repair shop and ask them who rebuilds their injectors for them.. any good diesel shop could do the work. (& a whole lot cheaper than LR) |

Its not the injectors... just had them cleaned when I had head gaskets replaced a month or two ago. I was told it was either fuel pump, or fuel pump check valve. Are those posibilities?? Also how can i test which one it is.. thanks, |

Check valve test-using a suitable tool, crimp the fuel line back by the fuel filter and look for pressure loss at the pressure gauge you have put on the fuel rail. That same pressure gauge will do the job of telling you if your pump is working. |

When your injectors where cleaned.. did your mechanic remove them and pop test them? because 9 times out of 10, running injector cleaner thru them via a small bottle of "magic stuff" in the gas tank won't do anything. If they were actually removed and bench tested then they are probably fine... as for testing the fuel pump & check value.. this is easy to do with a pressure gauge (bought easily at almost any parts store for $40 or so) there is a schrader value on the fuel bar.. you can test the pressure there when the fuel pump is on and engine running, and also to see if the pressure is held after the engine is shut down. Unless you have already done it, it might be prudent to change the fuel filter as well. (ruling out the cheap stuff.....) |

FWIW: This may sound simple, but chk your battery... LRs are known to eat batteries every 2-3 yrs (so freakin hot in the engine bay + a few good off-roading jolts)...If you have significant buildup of battery acid/corrosion/oxidation on the pos. terminal, then it may have significantly traveled down the pos. battery cable to the starter. If not enuf voltage is supplied to the starter, the engine labors real hard to turn over. This can also affect initial your idling, power to fuel pump, etc, giving the appearance of another problem, let alone batt. charging. Ask how I know this... Good Luck, W2 99D1 |
