I have just purchased a 96 disco, and I am very exicted about it. It has a few problems of course, and they are slowly being taken care of. I have just started working on the central door locks / alarm. I have gone through the archives at several sites and haven't found anyone with this problem.
Basically, the system doesn't do anything. Each door locks fine if I manually push the lock down, but they won't lock all at once with the remote, or by locking the drivers door with the key. Nothing happens when I hit the remote, no slight noise or anything as I have read others talk about. I bought the shop manual and tried the tests for the alarm system, but nothing happened.
It seems the system is completely dead.
Has anyone had any experience replacing the factory system with an aftermarket? Or is there hope for the one i have?

Thank you very much for any advice.
(ps. I have checked all of the fuses)

Mark:
If you have opened up the door, you know how complex the lock/switch arrangement is.

I think I'd start looking at the switches on the door lock to see if they are being actuated when you turn the key. If nothing else, it is a starting point.

Thanks guys. I have replaced the battery in the remote.
I am going to open the door up this weekend. My other thought was that maybe the alarm went nuts and the dealer just unpluged it or took a relay out or something. I looked at the relay bank under the dash on the passenger side, and there is a relay socket hanging out with no relay in it. The only other thing that doesn't work is the cruise control. Is there supposed to be an empty plug there, maybe for diagnostic comp. hookup?

Mark:
The absence of something in a relay socket can mean something as simple as your truck did not come with that particular option.

If you lock the door with the key and then go around and unlock and open another door (other than drivers) does it do anything odd? May as well confirm operation of the alarm while we are at it.

Paul,
I tried that, and the door unlocked, but nothing else happened. I guess I should take your advice and look inside the drivers door before I get too troubled.
I bought it from a small dealer, and his mechanic said that he got the remote to work once, then he inadvertantly set the alarm off, and then it didn't work after that. Thats why I thought he may have disabled it.

Any thoughts on the cruise? I have replaced the vacume lines and test the pump, which seems to run fine.

I really appreciate your help.

I've given up on my cruise. Replaced all lines and tested the pump. Relay's fine and replaced the steering wheel switch too. I'm thinking it's the CC ECU but it's $300+ to replace so the hell with it! I can use my foot...

Corey,
$300....that seems like a small price to pay to be able to sleep while you drive. I think I probably have the same problem. Have you tried a piece of broom stick between the seat and the pedal? Worked fine on 5ton cargo trucks in the army.
I have a feeling i too will be footing it.

Mark,
First off, does your remote light work?? The light should light up red when you press the button!! Second, does the driver door control all other door locks when you lock or unlock? it should! I would test this two things first if all that works it could be that your remote is not programed for your car, or that the actuator on the driver side is not working properly. Before you look into the actuator though, I would try to check or reprogram the remote! On this trucks the drivers door lock actuator is different than all otehr four door, it serves as the master controling all other locks so once pressed down or locked the other four doors should lock as well. On the cruise control issue, well I don't have a clue, if you've checked the hoses and the pump and still nothing than I wouldn't sweat on mine half the time the unit does not work anyway.

There doesn't seem to be a light on the remote. I have the 2 button version. So are all the doors supposed to lock when I push down the lock from inside, or only with the key from the outside? I think I just need to look in the door.

Mark,

First, when you say you checked "all the fuses" did you check all the fuses or just the ones marked for the locks.
Secondly, does the light go on for your cruise control? The cruise control issue is very common and I doubt these two may be related.

I believe I have checked all of the fuses, under the hood and under the dash. I dont know about the relays. I was hoping the shop manual would show me which relays I need to check for either problem, but I guess I need an electrical manual for that?
The light for the cruise (on the switch) does come on when I push it.

Thanks Rob,
Mark

Wow, I have the opposite problem - just bought a '96 on which the remote works but the driver's side door can't be directly opened with the key (just yet). It was still worth it to me. I'll crawl in from one of the other four doors if I have to!

(The other electrical nonworking things on my Disco, as I knew when I bought it, are back windows, back wiper, passenger side seat control. Hmm, wonder if there's some Rosetta stone to the sort of opposite problems.)
