Hello All,
I have a couple of questions.... Today my check engine light went off, I checked the display under the pass. seat and it was ol' #48-Stepper Motor. I pulled it and cleaned it thoroughly. Once replaced and engine restarted, the light still stays on and the error message displays #48. Will this eventually correct itself, or do I have to reset the switch?
My ABS light has been permanently on for 3 months. How do I check the speed sensors to see if that is the issue? Also, could the calipers be bad and cause the ABS to malfunction? Thank you all for your assistance.
John

OK, john, I'll jump in and give you some things to think about.

First off, if you did not clear the codes correctly, you don't know what other codes are there. To clear the codes sequentially, there is a white connector on the passenger side above the cardboard. It has five connections and one of them is a jumper from one side tothe next of hte connector. Turn key to position one, disconnect the connector, wait for 5-10 seconds, reconnect, turn key off, wait until you hear the relay drop, then turn key back on. If the light remains illuminated, there are additional codes to be read.

Keep in mind that the OBD systems only alert us to malfunctions that will cause increased emissions, so there could be something else causing that light to come on.

Some will vehemently state that you should only use genuine Land Rover stepper motors, but I am not one of them.

As for ABS, you're on your own with that one as I don't seem to have "The Touch" when it comes to ABS on these trucks.

Go clear some codes and tell us if any others were displayed.

Peace,
Paul

Paul, I have done what you requested, but the code comes up 48. The only white connector under the cardboard has 3 wires going in. Is this the correct one? I keep checking the display, but it just comes up 48...Please help. John

OK, if you extinguished the light and cleared the readout, you are clearing them correctly.

Now, it is time to set Base Idle and air gap (confirm air gap, as they rarely need changing). And, buy two more cans of carburetor cleaner and use them both to clean the IAC valve and the port into which it mates.

Then we'll see where you are.

No, the code still comes up 48. I cleaned the stepper AGAIN and replaced, still comes up with #48.

John, the method Paul described is found somewhere on the internet but doesnt work for me either (95 Disco also). The way to extinguish the light is to turn the car off, remove the fuel injection fuse located near the battery, turn ignition switch on (engine not running, just dash lights on), turn ignition off, replace fuse, and it should work.
