I thought I'd pass along my expence I had fixing my wander problem at highway speeds. After rotating tires and checking the pressure I still had problems. The first thing I found out was my 95 d1 with 111k on it had loose nuts and bolts on pretty much all the suspension pieces. I tightened in the front, the steering box bolts and steering arm nut, the radius arms, drag link and tierod. In the back the a-arm, ball joint carrier bolts, trailing arms, pretty much everything except the shocks and spring mounts were loose. I'd imagine anyone with a any year discovery should check the torque on those bolts periodically, at least I know I will now. That helped alot, but then I found a bad king pin bearing on the pass side. I overhauled the swivel balls, check the condition of my cv joints, and the most important set the preload again. I used a fish spring scale and got the feel of the resistance needed and set it from there. Maybe the bearing was my main issue, but the steering feels tight now and I think it was the preload that was at fault. Best of all my stupid swivel ball seals no long leak after being replaced, now I have two less spots in my driveway :-)

Andy,

Thanks for the great post. I just saved it for future reference. I am not crazy about handling of rover at highway speeds anyway - the thought of suspension pieces being loose - yikes!

Hmm... for the diagnosis of some high-speed wander, my mechanic has suggested repacking the bearings. I shall save your post, however... just in case - thanks!

The Bearings could be an issue too. I still think my main issue was the kingpin bearing and the bad preload for the wander. Preload will wear out in any D1 swivel ball, nature of the design, don't know if D2's are the same, they look it, but since I never worked on one I don't know. BUT, the loose suspension bolts and nuts probably gave my truck tha loose feeling I had and effected it's self center on the highway. My steering feels new now that I tightened the box mounts. I checked this last weekend my transmittion and engine mounts, no problems there but I think every 10K miles or so I plan on checking all suspension, drive train, engine, steering mounting bolts.
