Hey Folks,

A nasty stomach bug allowed me to skip work today and spend some quality time with the Rovers.

I began to contemplate removing my rear seats to gain a little more room for the pup and the fishing gear. I can't remember the last time anyone sat back there, and besides, I have jumpseats if anyone does come along.

As you can see, I'm trying to justify removing them. Anyone have any regrets about removing them? Anyone have any quick-and-slick setups for tossing them back in on a moments notice?

Let's hear 'em! Help me decide!

you'll never look back.
It's amazing how much junk you can put back there. my lab really appreciates it as well.
lots of folks do this.
plus you can sleep back there (diagonally) (sort of)

Yes, I thought about sleeping back there too.

If my wife finds out about the new steel wheels I want to buy I may be sleeping in there very soon!

just use a cordless driver and zip out the 4 bolts holding in each seat bottom. I think it's about an 11mm bolt. I take mine in & out all the time. Hint: cut the little carpet flaps near the bolt heads off because they just get in the way. You'll see what I mean...

Blue, I noticed those flaps yesterday - thanks for the tip.

I thought about removing the bolts and using a stud/wingnut setup, but I think the studs will just get in the way and catch things.

I replaced a rear seatbelt yesterday, in case anyone is wondering that Torx is a size T-50.

Maybe after I rip the seats out I'll rename the Deathsco...

I'll speak up for my husband, since he is at work. He took the back seats out of his 96 D1-belts and all. He built a really nice platform, carpeted it, and included various lockable cubbies. The dogs love it, as they have many windows to look out of. I definitely was NOT keen on the idea at first (where do the in-laws ride?). Which is why we have 2 discos now!

I took out my rear seats and seatbelts about 9 months ago and haven't looked back, except to put the smaller (driver's side) half back in for awhile...the hound loves it and I like having the space!

I even ripped out the carpet and padding back there, and put in some padding to keep things (dog included) from rattling around much.

Jacquelyne,
We have 2 as well, so that helps me to justify my modifications! We can take hers if we ever get any friends! ;) You need a roof rack for the in-laws.

Newman,
I took my carpeting out as well because I have a cargo liner, but I'll have to put something good back there for my golden retriever, Norton. He gets the royal treatment everywhere he goes, why should MY truck be any different? Kinda like the Queen's Rangie!

I take out the seats during the summer when I need the extra room for a powerwasher, 200' of hose, and about a dozen traffic cones I keep back there. I drilled some holes in a length of angle iron and used the existing mounting holes for the seats to bolt it down. It keeps things from sliding under the front seats. I've also rigged up one of those "Neat Sheets" (I think Glad makes them) as a sort or cheapo temporary waterproof bed liner. It's held in place by the carpet strip along the back and by the angle iron in the front. It's worked great so far.

Basically, ditch the seats. Makes for a better sounding stereo too.

I've got a 3-seater. If it were up to me, I'd just have a 2-seater. It is great with no seats back there. So much more room. And they are really very simple to take in and out. I keep all the hardware in the rear ashtray so I never have to look for it.

Well Folks,

I did it. I tackled it tonight and it took me about 15 mins, and it would have taken me a lot less time but one of the seatbelt bolts was on there pretty good.

My wife thinks I'm nuts but I like it. I usually have the front seats back as far as they will go, so even when I folded up the rear seats I didn't gain much room. And besides, like I said before, I don't have any friends so I don't really need them. More room for Norton, fishing gear, and bags of wet grass! Wooohooo!

Seriously, I like it and it was insanely simple. Blue, you were close - 10mm socket. And the seatbelt Torx is STILL a T-50. Goes nice when you have air tools too. Alyssa, I just put the bolts right back in with some thread lube on them, that way I'll never lose them.

Don't be surprised if you see a set of beige rear seats in the Classified section soon.... (Kidding! Don't email me!!!!)

Too bad we can't get the 2 door "panel van" style Discos like they had/have in Europe. :-)

Or center-facing rear seats like a 109

;)

(I guess you could put jump seats in per above, but I mean farther forward too...room for 8 then!)
