Well guys I just bought a 1996 Disco 1 with 103,000 miles on it and its a 5 speed model. No real problems yet. I have put 3,000 miles on it so far and all I have found thats really wrong with it is the cruise control does not work but I think I need a new pump. Also my ABS light just came on a few days ago so I am lookig though old posts to tackle that problem now. But anyway the more I hang out on here the more I am starting to freak out. There are so many problems with these things I am getting scared to touch the thing. Well what I would like to know is on average how many miles can these things go if they are well maintained. I know all of you are different and drive and maintain your vehicles differently. SO if you could let me know how many miles you got before you had to replace the engine or and if you are still rolling on your OEM motor how many miles does it have. Also I think most of the required services have been done on it by the former owner as he was a lawyer and had the money to take it to the dealer for every little problem but what things commonly go out at around 100,000 miles that I need to look over and consider replaceing. I do however have the orig. alternator. I'm proud of that. So please share your experiences.

Have seen many early Rangies and early Discos with 400000km on the clock with original engine and drive train. Clean good quality oil is the go.

I bought my '96 with 90k or so on the clock. I've religously changed my oil/filter every 3k miles. I'm now up to 160,000 miles. She runs good, transmission still holding up too.

Brandon,
I have a 94 5-speed with 142,000 on the original drivetrain-all of those things are working well.

Watch the clutch if you take her offroad, mine was on the original one about 1000m ago and I destroyed it-but I brought that on myself.

As all these guys said it seems to come down to regular maint. I wouldn't stress on it too much, at least you can work on these things. The ABS light coming on is more than normal and can be for a variety of reasons. I got tired of trying, pulled the fuses (and the annoying light bulb) and do without. Its not like she gets going fast enough to really worry about it, nor am I doing autocross in her.

As far as I can tell the life span is 32000 miles that is when I had it replaced (under warranty) by the dealer.

Obviously something was wrong with the engine.

297,000 miles (yep-U.S. miles) on my classic 3.9 with the original engine, , and t-case still. This rover hasn't spent much time off-raod though.

I changed the water pump last week and the steering pump is number 3. Maintained religiously and fluids changed every 2500 miles.

It is good to take your truck out and run it on the highway a lot. By doing so, you decrease the amount of carbon build up on the valves. Many city trucks have to get valve jobs at a very early age. Sometimes as early as 12,000 miles.

Our 95 disco was run like that a lot and then went to strict street driving for a few months, then it blew the head gaskets. BTW, 153,000 miles on the clock. Other than that, new cats, coil, plug wires. Lots of regular maint.

Bought mine at around 148K. Not well maintained. Needed a new cat and distibutor. Ran great to 165K. Rocker insert got pushed deeper into the rocker.
When I took off the oil pan, there was a layer of sludge about 1/4" thick.

If I didn't know the service history, the first thing I'd do is pull the pan, clean it and switch to synthetics. In your case, just switch to synthetics. If your engine gets hot for any reason, the synth won't break down and cook like regular oil.

264 Thousand on 94 Disco with original engine & driveline. Radiator changed, water pump too, but all else is from the factory. Time for a steering pump/box. Still has original rotoflex. Has been and still is driven cross-country and off-road. Drive them, change the fluids and you should be good for a long ride....

264 thousand on original roto? damn...
since i've put OME HD springs, roto became a wear item with lifespan of 25kmi... my #3 is already on its last threads.

Exhaust manifolds (both), Cats, and rear output bearing on transfer case.

Front main seal leaking like a beotch but will soon be remedied. :-)

Pete:

You are not the only one I have heard with this problem. Seems the little buggers don't like having their angle of incidence changed. When this one goes, I am going to go u-joint because I will be changing springs too.

I've got 150k miles. No engine-trans box- work. Just to give you an idea of what they can take, the previous owner (had it from 0-85k miles)was my wife's step father and he never checked the oil and only added oil when the oil light would come on. That's gotta tell you something about these engines.
