My 96 Disco died on the way up to Mount Washington (6,200 feet)in New Hampshire. My engine stalled three times above 3,000 feet, but fired right up about ten seconds after I shot the key off and cracked it up again. It was running up the hill fine and all of the sudden the RPM would drop, it would hesitate for a few seconds bearly running and suddenly stop. It fell like the fuel was shut off to the engine. No service engine light ever came on. This is the only time this is ever happened. Water temp looked normal, plenty of fuel in the tank, fuel filter is about 4k miles old. No problems on the way down. No problems in the last 1000 miles. Any thought, anyone?

Thanks;

Lucas.

If the fuel pump is working at all, it can't be a vapor lock. The pump is back at the gas tank, and develops enough pressure for the injection stuff. So there should always be positive fuel pressure as long as the fuel pump works.

I did open the gas cap on the first episode, but did not hear much suction into the tank. I did not open the gas cap the next two events and just did a normal start. I am very intrigued.

Thanks anyway;

Lucas.

Lucas I very frequently drive my 96 over 10,000 feet & think that I have stalled maybe once & that was my fault I think. Something tells me maybe this is a coincedence. Checked plugs & wires lately?? I mean Boulder is almost 6000 ft & we don't have any problems in town.

I doubt that it is vapor lock since the vehicle wouldn't have started right up until the engine cooled off. You said your fuel filter is pretty much brand new. How does your air filter look? Maybe read the post titled Paul, Kyle, Leslie, or anyone. It might point you into the right direction. Similar problem in that post. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone, I was back up in the Mountains of VT again this week and went up to 3,800' with no problems. Fuel filter is about 4K old, the same with the plugs and wires. I am thinking water in the tank or something that was getting in the fuel system when I was running at high RPM and at a very steep grade. I must of sucked some water past the filter. We'll see...

Later;

Lucas.
