During the past couple of weeks it has been pretty hot. There have been two times while driving in stop and go traffic that my temp guage has shot up to just out of the high end of the safe area. Then about 2 to 3 minutes after I turn the heat down the temp levels right out. This is the first time I have ever seen the guage ever change after the car warms up. (I know that the if the car was really over heating the heater trick takes a lot longer than that.) You guys have any ideas what this could be? Could my temp guage be going bad?

Anything from low on coolant to a bad radiator. You'll need to post the year, miles, age of tstat, fan clutch, rad, etc.

I've had this happen and found the coolant slightly (1 qt)low. DOubtful this as the problem. Loss of pressure by recovery tank, hose (or a heater core as mine does now) may also be in the running. I looped my heater supply lines on top of the right valve cover and have lost very little coolant since.

I think the problem was my radiator. It was really coated in mud from last time I went offroading. The mud was almost rock hard on it. I got the hose and sprayed it off and cleaned it up. After cleaning it up the AC felt really cold and it sounded like the car ran better. No overheating so far. I will have to drive a liitle more to see if problem is fixed.

mine overheated while sitting at idle in a parking lot in New Mexico last week, It was debris between the radiator and AC ujit proventing the flow of air across teh radiator. A good cleaning job and the whole thing works better.
