The front shaft on my D1, has some looseness to it. I can grab the shaft & the joints smoot slightly. Is there supose to be any play in the joint? If not, then I will need new u joints or upgrade the shaft. |

Look to see what's moving. Is the whole shaft, and all it's parts moving? If so, what you're seeing is just play in the t-case and diff gears. If the main shaft moves, but one or both of the flanges do not, then it's the U-joints or slip joint. |

looks like i have bad joints. who has the best deal on u-joints? Maybe I should consider an upgrade, but I am not sure it the OME HD shocks and springs are to blame or if they just made an existing condition noticable?

I noticed that my U joint was bad when me and 4 friends were stranded on the side of the road late on saturday night on the way to do some camping.... Even after it blew up I had a local driveline shop fit a replacement UJOINT in for about 60$. The local guys rock! best of luck |

Napa...spicer...etc - U-joint is a common size. Any driveline shop can replace it, should be about $10-15 + price of joint. Spicer joint will be more (worth it in my opinion) No need for a new DS with your setup - just new joints. If they haven't been done before, it'd probably be a good idea to do both in front and rear shafts. Bill |

I was planning on doing the job my self. Is that a bad idea? Is there any special tools required? I read my shop manual and it seams straight forward. Peter, do you have a Napa part #? And much were they brad |

they are about $25, but make sure you use a short grease fitting. some off the ones supplied are too long and will snap of creating another pain in your ass. |

Brad - you cdan do it yourself with the tried and true vise and socket method - it's just a pain, To me, it's worth a couple bucks to have it done. If you get the spicer joints - they are end cap lubed and easier to get to - though also vulnerable to damage, Everythings a tradeoff. Good luck, Bill PS - I think the Napa # is a #344 - but different year Disco's can vary. Bill |

if you have any notion of taking a truck off road you need to become good at changing u-joints having them fail is common on any brand truck that has been lifted and is running oversized tires. the reason is that for every degree out of optimim that a u-joint runs it shortens the service life by 10%. add to this the increased load of undergeared axles and you have a job that will need to be done pretty often in the life of your truck.
