has anyone seen the US Army's commerical with the Sgt climbing up an ice slope. he reaches the top and checks his location by using his watch. now i have a watch that has a compass/barometer/altimeter/thermometer, so its not like i am attracted to shiny objects but i would like to find a retailer for that watch if any of you active duty members have a clue please let me know. mike w |

Check out Suunto. I was gonna get one but I decided I needed some Asolo boots instead. the Suunto are in my opinion one of the best out there for the money. www.suunto.com O yeah, I am not sure if that what the army dood has |

I know Casio makes one that looks similar. I have one with Baro./Alt./Thermo. It has held up through 5 years of my abuse. |

Ian, i have the casio pathfinder. its a really nice tool, but the real head scratcher is the all plastic body pieces. it tends to mar a bit easier than other speciality watches i have owned before. i have had it now for two years and it has been banged around some nasty rocks and LR metal. I have looked at the sunnto but the casio looks better imho mike w |

I'm going to be really anal, its a casio pathfinder II. The II was to fix the barometer, the original would compinsate for body temp and threw off the reading. I sold them at rei, I have been a big fan of the nike recentally thought. Suntto are nice, just to big for my tastes. I just got the Nike and like its size, but the temp gauge and the alt seem not to be great on accuracy. Just my .02 |

I leave my sports instruments watch altimeter at home since I got my Garmin 76s with its gps compared altimeter and 24hr graphic ploting. Watch altimeters are cool with lots of blinking lights and buttons, but kind of a pain in the ass to keep calibrated accurate in my opinion. I just wear my timex analog expedition and hope it dies soon so I can get one of those luminox watches they sell at EE. http://www.expeditionexchange.com/luminox/index.htm I said to myself I'll get one as soon as my current watch dies. I'd rather get the rest of the info from my sensor gps.

I had the pathfinder and found it to bulky. as a nerd that actully uses the features o nthe watch it was a hard decision. the temp guarge , though liek the otehr guy said was supposed to compensate for my body tempature never did. i dont use that feature unless i take the watch off over night and review the statistics some other wathces i can't find useful because i wear my watch on my right hand and they now seem to rotate the face so that it can be read easier on the left hand and it makes it harder for me to read. i do not like this trend. oh, i went with the casio weather station it's liek the pathfinders baby brother. also i used to have one before that that had a depth guage on it too. it worked very well. rd |

Andy, I was just talking to John about those watches the only thing I will do when I get one is change the band out, I cant stand a rubber band on a watch, nylon would be a little better I think on those hot days. Its a nice 100 degree day here in Kansas City and it doesnt look like its going to let up anytime soon.

I'd agree, here in slc its been over 100 all week. I too would probably change the band. Actually reading John Lees posts about quality watches has made me a convert. No it's not an Omega, I can't afford that, but now I want a quality simple analog watch. Since I am hard on watches and go through a $20 timex special a year, I hope a Luminox will make it so I don't have to get a watch for a while. I will say my sports instruments altimeter is still working, loks like hell btu works and I destroyed a suntto vector while climbing, cracked the case and broke the mount for the band. Now if they could make a clock for the discovery that is reliable and last a long time. |

I think they discontinued the model pathfinder I have awhile ago. I've had the thing so long I forgot what it's called. I have the same problem with the plastic. I also think it's a little too big. It's been awhile since I've looked at watches. They have actually gotten alot better in looks and function since I was in the market. I wish I had 200 bucks to burn on a new one. |

My favorite "beater" watch is the Luminox 3001 with black nylon band: http://www.expeditionexchange.com/luminox/DSC04047.jpg http://www.expeditionexchange.com/surefire/DSC02717.jpg This is the watch I wear while wrenching. The band is designed to fit over a wetsuit, and so it's very long. I actually fold it over and tuck it back into the loop: http://www.expeditionexchange.com/surefire/DSC02725.jpg You can buy one of these nylon bands at the Military Watch Resource: http://www.broadarrow.net/straps.htm
