You guys are not going to believe this... I don't believe it, and I've seen it! Every morning, I come out to find half a dozen or more dead snails cracked and gooey all over my batteries! It looks like they climb up there for whatever reason (and all over the engine and hood) eventually finding themseleves completting a circuit, and get fried! I can see the initial attraction, as I'm leaking coolant, and that's supposed to smell sweet, but they go straight for the batteries! What the hell?! | ||

Erik, and everyone else leaking coolant, PLEASE fix that leak ASAP. It could be more than snails that you save in the process. We lost a much-loved pet a couple of months ago to antifreeze poisoning, though it appears that was an intentional act of a sicko in the neighborhood. Karen | ||

Karen, I'm sorry to hear about your pet, and of course I'll fix my leak as soon as possible. However, modern glycol based anti-freeze isn't nearly as poisonous as the old ethanol based products. Even so, until my leak is fixed, I'll wash down the pavement frequently. | ||

Watch out for wiper fluids as well -- my brother's cat apparently lapped up and subsequently succumbed to wiper fluid that collected under the car after trying to fix a washer nozzle. ---Norm | ||

I don't know the various kinds of coolants available, but I do know they tested our cat and he was positive for ethylene-glycol. He never had a chance despite immediate veterinary care. We thought it must have been a sad accident and contacted all the nearest neighbors asking them to check for leaking vehicles or containers. It was highly unusual for him to leave our farm, but two neighbors' driveways are very near one of our borders. We knew we had nothing open or leaking here (we checked obsessively, just to be certain) and thought perhaps he stalked a critter toward a neighbor's drive, where there might have been a leak. 24 hours later his brother was poisoned with a HUGE amount of rat poison, evidently laced with something to compel him to eat it. After much intensive care, he lived. Lab tests are being run to determine the full contents of the vomitus. Accidents can happen, with tragic results, but our guys were victims 5 and 6, (the previous four were dogs) apparently the victims of a serial poisoner. We had no idea the other animals had been poisoned. The investigation is on-going. Norm, I had no idea wiper fluid was also a poison. So much to watch out for... Karen  | ||

Only an animal, yes, but I pitty the man who would ever poison my dogs. Some people will take care of the problem themselves and leave the police out of it. | ||

It's not "only an animal", it's sick and wrong. I don't have a pet, because my current lifestyle won't allow me enough time to properly care for it, but I can relate to how people feel about their animals. They become part of the family. People who intentionally hurt defenseless animals deserve swift and harsh punishment. Another thing to keep in mind is that many serial killers started out killing and mutilating animals. - Axel | ||

We have a serial cat killer here in Denver. He has struck 24 times, twice right in my neighborhood. They are sick and I hope they catch him soon. Back to the post, I can�t think of why snails would do that, very weird. | ||

i know snails like beer too. as do slugs of course. i know my mother puts little things of beer out for the slugs in her garden to kill them. (guess they eat the wildflowers, garden plants, etc) i am not a fan of cats, but could not imagine intentionally killing one. some pretty odd folks out there from the sounds of it. | ||

What's odd are the people who snoop around gardens looking for little "slug saucers" of beer to drink! There was this one time I ... I mean a friend of mine ....  (sorry everyone -- was painting my roof rack basket in the garage and might have inhaled a bit) Andy | ||

Luis, we are trying to do just that. Fortunately, the police are backing Animal Control all the way and aiding in the investigation. Axel, one of the two main suspects has followed a very similar course. He's still a juvenile (barely), and started with petty theft and strange social behaviors, and advanced to vandalism and arson. When we nailed him for destruction of property (upon his arrest he confessed to over 80 open vandalism/theft cases he and his buddies had commited) I brought up the same point to the Juvenile prosecutors about the path of some hardened criminals. They took it very seriously and slammed him hard. Ankle bracelet went on, home detention, probation and off to military school he went. But he was home for Easter vacation and visited my next door neighbors the day before my first cat was poisoned. I don't think society is done with this shithead yet. Anyone who intentionally poisons an animal SHOULD be dealt with "swiftly and harshly", for a number of reasons. Karen |
