Steering noise has me concerned. 1999 Disco 2, 48K miles, I only hear it when I turn the wheel approximately 90 degrees or more to the right, such as when I'm making a hard right turn from a red light or stop sign or when I'm pulling into a space in a parking lot. Sounds like an unoiled kitchen cabinet or a "creaky" door. Seems to be coming from just behind the dash.

Today, I opened the hood and took a look inside while trying to turn the wheel through the open DS window. Didn't notice anything in particular except I did see the steering column and related shafts turning, which led me to take a closer look and review the workshop manual. Seems the steering column is connected to an intermediate shaft which has UJs at both ends.

After looking at this I have two questions. First the intermediate shaft appears to be set into the upper UJ at an angle; is this normal? Second, what might this noise be (driving me nuts)? There is a sort of "wet grime" spot on one of the forks of the upper UJ, where the intermediate shaft connects to the steering column. Is this an indication of a potentially major issue and is there anything I can do to alleviate the problem? (Guess that's three questions, not two.)

Any help or thoughts appreciated.

Kent

Is it any more difficult to turn than normal? If it is, it could be low on fluid. But noises are somewhat difficult to diagnose over the internet, as most some will probably tell you. Kinda like telling a doctor over the phone,"It hurts here when I cough." Hurts where???

Kent,
If I understand what you're saying, I've got the same problem. It seems to be worse when it's cold outside. I don't have a solution for you, but at least you know you're not alone. It's been going on like that for about 2 years now with no ill effect. I asked about it at the dealer onetime and my answer, delivered in a 15 min. essay on God only knows what, was "...and we can't fix that." Best of luck in ending the squeal. It's kind of embarrassing isn't it?

Yeah, I know it's tough to diagnose over the 'net, thought I'd give it a shot anyway, see if anybody else had the issue. Fluid level is fine, I checked that first, and it's not any harder to turn than it's ever been. No other ill affects noted. I suspect this may just be one of those Rover quirks I'll have to live with; solve it by turning up the radio. Just paranoid, though; don't want to lose steering, you know? That wouldn't be fun.

Forgot to throw in the most important part of my thread. The noise apparently comes from a rubber seal somewhere along the steering column. Even though my dealer claims they can't fix it, if you're feeling bold I'm sure you can start taking it apart and spray the faulty seal with silicon. I've just never gotten frustrated enough to spend an hour or so digging into it. Just make sure the silicon spray is rubber friendly. Hope that helps a little bit more.

99 D2, 52K miles. This just started happening on mine too, about 2 months ago. Comes and goes, only when turning right and only when stationary, cold or hot. If the truck is moving even just a little, the "grinding" does not occur. My theory is the pump.

FWIW, seems like there was a thread many moons ago about replacing the upper PS line to a larger diameter or different fitting or something. Might be related? Maybe I'm thinking RR...

Does the noise sound like a FART? I know, it's crude. I've been told that the steering box is cooked and I've been told that it's nothing. I've had it for 2+ years and everything is cool. I've concluded that my D1 has no control over it's bodily functions. It drools, it pees a little i.e. the need for super sized DEPENDS, and it farts.

Have you checked the pas fluid level?
If low, top up. I would recommend that even a little synthetic atf in there will help
Hope this basic idea doesn't offend

Jack, well, I hadn't thought of that but, yes, it's kind of a slow fart sound, like a little left-cheek sneaker. Good to know this doesn't seem like a major disaster waiting to happen. Fluid levels are fine (no offense taken, Chris), no degradation in steering, i.e. it's not harder to turn, etc. JR, it frustrates me hearing it, but I'm nowhere near bold enough (or "handy" enough) to get in there and start taking things apart. Appreciate everybody's comments.

My truck has exactly the same problem - worse when cold, or when I drive through a cold enough creek, for example. Actually, it IS a farty sound. And, coincidentally, I'm waiting right now for LR Rancho Mirage (I know, I know - there are people here who are very unhappy with this dealer) to call me about it. They say there's a bulletin coming out on this, but it's been six weeks now, and I was told to wait two or three.

I'll post if I hear anything about that bulletin.

Hmm... maybe I'm talking about something else... Or perhaps my farts are just of a different pitch. Anybody interested in starting a fart band?
