I am concidering getting a full roof rack, an Adventure or a Wilderness roof rack specifically and was wondering if anyone on here has any experience putting a surf board on it. The size range would be between 6 and 9 feet. Also, while I'm on the roof rack subject, does anyone know if Yakima bike racks are compatible, (are the Yakima crossbars the same diameter as those on the LR adventure rack) with either? Thanks.

You can put any Yakima accessory on the rack by using rubber spacers wrapped around the bars. The Yak stuff is just a tad too big. I currently have mine set up to carry 4 bikes.

Thanks. Did you have to get another bar to support the end of the Yakima tray, (the end of the tray where the back wheel sits)? I know you have to do that with the Yakima Mega Load Warrior, but didnt know about the SD Adventure roof rack. Thanks.

It has been my experience that anytime a board is strapped down tight enough for highway driving on any kind of roof rack, boards end up with dents and squashed spots just from the straps.

I vote for always carrying boards inside vehicles. Besides -- when you balance them from front dash to back of rear seats, they make great shelves!

Have fun! Jamie

hey Jamie, this is Chris, we met at Rico's and the Fla. Ralley. I have pads on my crossbars, ( I currently use Yakima cross bars) and have not had any noticable damage to any of my boards as of yet. Plus being a surfer in Florida, you need to take a long board to the beach to be able to justify an hour drive for 1-2 foot waves. And my 9 foot board does not fit in the car if I plan on taking anyone else with me. Thanks for the advice though. Oh and if you are looking around, Dakine makes a strap that has a built-in "bungee" to it that gives the strap enough strength, but does not dent your board.

i have a collection of yak and thule parts on my lrna rack...chad is right, the lrna is *slightly* smaller, but i cut strips of old inner tube to take up the space. and i actually stopped using the tray to hold the rear wheel...they sit nicely on the many crossbars of the lrna rack and i use an old toe strap to hold it down.

you guys are funny....dings....your strapping your boards way to tight (or get a board bag)...anyway i carry anywhere from 1 to 6 boards on top of my disco. the thule crossbars work well...i also had an adventure rack and all i used where the tie downs that you buy at autoparts stores that have hooks on the end...this works well too..now i have no rack on my car except for the stock ones and i still just use the auto part straps with the hooks on the end..and of course i always use board bags and or coffins....cheers

Chris, That's cool that we met at events. Your profile said green rover?? I'm trying to remember green rovers -- did you have the tent on top of your rover at RR's? Jamie
