Half of all the discos I wanted to look at had been sold. The left overs were all very rough. Frustrating to say the least. My wife is now second guessing trading in our uber realible trooper on a disco.

I have not given up *yet*. We found a 1997 LSE (I thought LSE came out in 1998???) with 82k miles on it. One owner. It came from GA, a landie dealer down there had the spare tyre cover upon it so I'm guessing it might be dealer maintained.

No rear air. No jump seats. No acessories (brush guard etc). It had power seats and dual roofs. Seats were also pipe in contrasting colors (I love the brits when they do that mmmmm).

What would this truck be worth in the real world? NADA says $13K While KBB says $12K.

I poked around it (didn't drive it as they were closed when I found it). Didn't see any oil except on the bottom of the pan. No rust at all. A few scratches here and there. The color was champagne. Bumpers showed the whitening oxidation.

My carfax account is no longer valid so I can't run a search on it. Any ideas on this truck? I called the dealer and they said it ran great (of course).

Thoughts? Yeah I know, I should drive it :D

(I was very disappointed at the care and condition of many of the discos I looked at. Do people care about their cars anymore?)

If it spent life as a Mall Rat it might be a good deal. I rarely find use for my jump seats, though the rear air comes in handy every once in a while. (Like hauling groceries up a long hot mountain road.)

Sometimes people buy all the "Go Anywhere, Do Anything" legend about Land Rovers. For whatever reason, this may translate intop an "It's so tough, I don't even have to work on it" attitude. (It's not a good attitude to have with any machine.)

If the Owners Manual, and Service record are still with it, and it was dealer maintained, they may have stamped some of the scheduled maintenence records into the log book.

Good luck on your search.

If it is dealer maintained you can also just get them to pull up a maintenance history for you. No need to rely on the stamps; just because they're not there doesn't mean they weren't done.

The condition all depends on the owner. I've seen 2002 discos that look like a nuclear bomb went off inside of it. These people just don't take care of the trucks, and then they knock all four corners off of it. Most of these trucks have had a dog of some sort destroy the inside and then the kids squish fries down in between the seats. Usually, these trucks have mechanical problems to go along with the exterior appearance.

On the other side, I've seen 95s and 96s that look fairly decent. One 96 has ony 45k on it and was garage kept! There are a lot of 97s (discos and RRs) that look very good for their age. It all depends on the owner and what they do with it and how well they keep it up.

Look at every truck very carefully and weight in all considerations.

You might want to drive down to Atlanta and visit Bear Valley Land Rover. I believe they only sell used Land Rovers. Judging from their ads on their website (www.bvlr.com) and on land rover exchange (www.lrx.com) they should have some good prices. lrx.com will also have other rover owners' ads.

Definitely keep looking and also check eBay. They usually have quite a few Discos. My guess is that the ones that are newer and are trashed on the interior are the ones that just came off a lease. That same care probably applies to the engine too. Just my $ .02

When I looked, in Mobile, AL., I found some 96's ranging in price from 6-11 grand. The one for 11 was overpriced for the area. Roughly 9 grand is the going price for a 96/97 disco when I was looking two months ago. These vehicles were the SE7's with all the bells and whistles. One was a 96 SE7 with 80k miles and a safari pkg. with a roof rack, ladder, brush-guard, lights, with all the bells and whistles. It sold for I think 9 or 10k. It was gone before I called but the ad had been in the paper for 2 weeks. Keep looking if you are not satisfied with the one you are looking at. Vehicles are like partners. Some you are uncomfortably stuck with. Others you are proud to spend time with/on, even if they do show a bit of age/wisdom. I was fortunate and had the luxury to look for 3 months until I found the perfect Rover. She had more than I wanted, and was 6k less than the nearest dealer for a comparable vehicle. Good Luck searching

In this age of two and three year leases, people do not take of thier vehicles. That is why all these automakers are offering free service; it's the only way lease people will bring them for the minimum oil changes. The shame of it all is that cars now are built much better than 20 years ago and with proper maintenance just about any new vehicle should see way, way past 100K miles. Unfortunately, you have these leasing bozo's that don't even check thier oil and tire pressure and drastically shorten the lifespan of thier cars.

No reason for rear air or jump seats, what you might think are useful will likely rarely be used, unless you have a family of 7 of course.

I drove the truck last night and I think it's in the running to become mine :-) A smile has once again returned in the search for the disco.
