the right side of the rear axle is leaking 90wt. i have looked at the service manual and it looks fairly straight forward. just wanted to see if anyone had any short cuts, cautions, tool list and/or some kind words of sympathy for the upcoming fix. all volunteers willing to drive to central Ohio for the repair will be paid in steaks and cold beer (or soda for those who don't partake of the devil's brew).....

Mike, I just did the rear driverside. Very straight foreward. I had the right tools for the job and "ALL" needed parts. I do suggest to replace the seal between the axle hub to the axle, that's the one that gave me problems. Good Luck!

I replaced my seals about a week ago. It also states in the manual to check to make sure the breather on the axel is clear. If the breather is clogged pressure can build and "push" the oil past the seals. As long as you have the hub open re-grease the bearings.

Chad, that is what caused the eventual failure of the seal was a pluged vent banjo fitting. i will proberly replace the bearings. hopefully this will be a NAPA available part.

Now that I've replaced my seals I need to follow my own advice. It looks like I am still seeping a small amount of 90w oil so my conclusion is a clogged axel breather. I checked my LR service manual and it mentions a clogged breather as a possible cause for leaks, but I can't find any info on removing the breather or if it can be cleaned out (de-clogged) or if it needs to be replaced. The only info I could find in the archives is on extending the breathers (have already done that). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

its a simple fix, the breather unscrews from the axle housing and will basicly fall apart into the banjo joint, the breather bolt and the crush washers. there is a black hose connected to the Banjo joint. take them apart and clean them. i purchased some .250 plastic tubing from Lowes and replaced the black hose the factory installed. i then comnnected the hose and routed it up to the engine compartment. this gets it up and away from any possible mositure. i recommend that you replace the hose and the crush washers. i perfer alum. washers.

good luck

fixed the leak! its quite surprising how easy that Land Rover is to wrench on. those wishing to jump in and change i suggest that you order everything ahead of time,it would make things less complex to put it back together with the tear down fresh in mind. spend the money and buy a good hub wrench. i bought one from a LR vendor and it doesn't allow for a torque wrench hook up so the torque value was a by feel and not the more accurate means. the bearings are Timken 3049 and the seals seem to be a spiecal order item. also go ahead and buy the LR seal driver for the bearing grease seal it will make it go a bit easier. total time including cleaning all the parts in a 5 gal pail was 4 hours. like i said really simple.

oh get a real service manual as well.

"i then comnnected the hose and routed it up to the engine compartment."

You need to make sure you don't have any dips in your hose routing, otherwise gear oil could pool there and effectively defeat the purpose of the breather. Ask me how I know..........
