Anyone know the exact name/part# for this rubber part at the rear crankshaft? Mine is starting to tear and would like to replace it-any idea how difficult/easy this might be to replace?
Thanks in advance.

Frederico,
You've just opened Pandora's box.

It's the rotoflex coupling, you can get a new one for about $65.00. However, you're about to get more information than you've ever wanted about replacing the rear drive shaft. Best of luck.

I can already hear the rest of ya'll cracking your knuckles and licking your lips.

Since I'm doing this right now, I'll chime in..Save yourself some aggravation and go for the upgrade to U-Joints now. Especially if you're planning on any lift. Although the flex coupler is relatively inexpensive ($68, I think, from Nathan) you'll have to replace it repeatedly. I just wore out another one after only 2500 miles. My driving might also contribute to the excessive wear..

Thanks for all the help-I may just have to get another flex coupler for now. Upgrading to U-joints seems a little too complex right now- I don't want to break anything and not have spare parts lying around to fix it.
Is it common for the coupler to tear like it did?
Thanks to all of you for the helpful information.

While were on the topic and since Pandora's Box is already wide open-what is the advantage of the U-joint vs what I have now? Does it just eliminate the need to change the flex coupler?

In theory, the rubber flex coupler is much less reliable than a universal joint. Once you've switched out the driveshaft, it becomes just as easy to replace a U-joint as it is the rotoflex coupler. Here's the perk, since U-joints are standard on just about every other automobile you can buy replacements for $15-$30. Also, U-joints come with grease fittings so you can lube them periodically, there's not much preventative maintenence you can do for a rubber coupling.

That said, I've still got my rotoflex. I do a moderate amount of fourwheeling and I've yet to tear it yet. Assuming I ever get the lift I've been planning on, I'm going to go ahead and replace it with a u-joint.

Bottom line: You're in for some knuckle banging to replace the rotoflex, why not go ahead and put in a more reliable, and less expensive down the road, system (U-joint) while you're at it?
