1. Get a snorkel

2. Either:
a) Extend breather lines to snorkel, or
b) Regularly check oils for water (cloudiness)

3. Check connectors where breathers go into axles. These were LOOSE on my D2 and needed sealing with silicone.

4. Waterproof electronics and ECU in engine compartment and fuel pump (under cabin floor in back) with grease and/or silicone.

5. Check slits in door seals and fill with silicone. Check and seal main harness port in footwell.

6. Remove any CD player, and seal computers on cabin floor.

If you do this and have a firm footing, you will be able to ford 3 feet and briefly 4 feet or more water. But not in slippery mud. Make sure you go with a second vehiclem, and dont bank on an electric winch working under water.

Michael,
I second everything Dean just said.

However, I 'briefly' took on 4-5 feet of water in a completely stock D1. Click on my name to check out the pic in my profile. What you see is me about a 1/3 of the way to the deepest part. My buddy got a little trigger happy. My truck cut off about 45 minutes later randomly, but after resetting the intertia switch I was off and rolling again. One of the dumbest things I've ever done, but at least I've got a picture of it.

Do what Dean said and you're good to go. Enjoy.

Went through 3-4 feet of water and it washed over the hood several times.

I don't have a snorkel.....my air cleaner got wet.

I have a leaky rear pinion seal....the fluid is milky with water

I don't have a waterproofed ECU.....could not start the truck for over an hour until we sun-dried the ECU.

I removed the CD player,,,,I'm not totally dumb

I have slits in my door gaskets.....and a nice waterfall when I opened the doors, and a funky smell that is just starting to fade.

Well, you live and you learn.....

But is is still super cool to see the water rushing over the hood, slapping againt the windshield, and the disco sill makes it out!!

Michael,

Buy some black duck tape at Walmart, clean the seals with alcohol, and put the duck tape there permanently. If you take your time, no one will ever know that it is there, it blends in that well. Make sure that the slits at the bottom are covered well. This will SLOW DOWN the rate at which water can enter rover.

You should always make sure your brakes are working when you leave water, and check all fluids for signs of contamination. If there is any contamination, there will be a "milky look".

After I've been swimming in rover, I always change air filter and have the engine steam cleaned. If I can't get to steam cleaning soon, I open hood, stand on ladder and wash my own engine with hose sprayer.

A snorkel does not mean a rover can swim underwater. It is more of a help for air filtering when going from hot dusy trails and thru water (and vice versa), just lets it breath a little clearer.

Besides the CD player, there are many electrical and computerized like parts that can fry under the seats. Our USA rovers are not made to swim well like overseas rovers!

Try not to let the bow wake break over your hood. Slow and steady is the answer -- not speed. NEVER go into water when you do not know how deep it is. Even if you have to stand up to "peer pressure" in refusing to go in or follow someone else.

Let this be a warning of what could happen on a very bad day, this DID NOT have a happy ending at the other side of the stream:

i've been through some pretty deep stuff, i just didn't know if the trans and t-case are prone to take on water,or if they could be sealed. once i accidently slid into about 4ft. it was barely touching the top of the lights.i was pulled out by a f250.all i had to do was change the fluids. but i don't want to worry every time i go through some water.
