It will roll forward if you put it in park. A way to stop this would be before you put it in park, put it in neutral, put the e-brake up then put it in park, that will stop the rolling. And really put the brake on, not just a little up.

Do you have driveline slop? By that I mean, w/ the vehicle off and in P can you turn the driveshaft at all by hand? If so, how much?

Or is it a shifting problem?

Try to be clear, it helps people help you better.

I think in his first post it was fairly clear "at least to me" that he has driveling slop and as a result the car shifts poorly. Mine is the same way, the shifts within the are fine. But on that rare occasion when it does mis shift or maybe I lift off the gas half way through a shift or floor it right after coming off the gas the my driveline also has a funky slop that I feel is excessive. I can live with it but mine is annoying. I have the same rolling problem and when going from forward to reverse etc, there is noticable slop.

just a Rover thing I believe.. Someone correct me if im wrong but I believe it is caused by the combined backlash in the diffs and clutches in the transmission when torque is applied. Its not consistent because not always is the same resistance or pressure on each diff and the clutches.. but whatever.. Im just guessing here.

If you have over 60K miles, one thing you might want to take a close look at are the u-joints. I just replaced all of mine, front/rear, and that helped reduce some slop. I did not do this becuase of slop, but failure.
Just a thought anyway.

i hear a loud clonk when shifting into reverse. when i'm driving, and i left off the gas, it seems to downshift too "hard"

Both the Discoveries I've owned (from new) have rolled around when I put them in park, and they've both made that "clonk." If your u-joints are normal, then these symptoms should be normal.

Well you need to remember that BOTH axles are working (Permanent 4x4) so you will get some noise but if its excessive you should check it out. As for the clonk noise when put in park the transmission will make a noise when on a slight incline or decline becasue of the rolling back or forward.

Has anybody ever noticed that when shifting from Reverse to Drive while still moving (should not do this anyway but...) and then pressing the gas, the front axle shifts faster than the rear and the rear driveshaft makes a thud noise?
