The clutch on my main fan froze ofter a water pump failure. I called for the part and several places want 250 plus dollars. Is there another clutch for the fan that will work or should I use an electric fan?

After reading about these plastic fans disintigating, I've been thinking of other options. Electric for one or metal flex fan.
I'm swaying towards the flex fan. No clutch to go out. No blades breaking off and going into vital parts of the cooling system. No silinoid or motor to burn out.
The only negative thing about it is at any RPM, the engine sounds like a 737 taking off, cold or hot. I don't know how it would effect my fuel consumption or power.

Has anyone tried the conversion to electric? I'm tired of sounding like a 737. I'm tired of going 2 mph on hot days b/c the fan is robbing my engine or restraining it.

I currently have the factory fan off right now and there is a big improvment on performance. I have been thinking of that myself. blake how much for that clutch?

Jerry, how did you measure this improvement in performance? By hearing less noise from absent engine fan?

Luis, flex fan is a worse turd than electrics only (BTDT). Plain useless.

Nothing.......can beat the CFM flow of an engine powered fan. Question is, how do you drive - street only with little sitting in traffic - if so then think about swicthing to electric.

But - if you idle in traffic often or live in a hot climate or wheel the truck at all - stick with the stock setup - a little "perceived" horsepower is not worth the reduced reliability of eletric fans IMO.

If your viscous fan clutch is working properly - the fan is engaged only when needed. Sure it spins all the time, but not a full engine revs until the clutch locks up.

BTDT with street cars with big cams - it is not the way to go.

Peter is right to - Flex fans aren't worth shit!

Tod I mean't to say XF/EA not AU. The AU cars have a really nice dual electric in a plastic shroud set up. This might also be worth a look I have used these to convert Xj jags , they happen to be the same size as Jag rad and boy they move some air. Au set are about $200.

sweet...i will look into the xf/ea fan.....those thing are cheap as chips....had few xfs in my time...my disco currently has twin thermos on the front...they are keeping the big girl cool..until i tow a boat or start some serious mudding....so im basically grounded to town at the mo...but im going to find out the benefits of fitting an electric fan..not a thermo operated one...manual operation....
