Looking at MTR's for the D1. NWP 3" springs w/OME's. Back wheel openings trimmed 1/2" on rear lip and rolled under for clearance. Choice A: 265/75-16 dia 31.9" Choice B: 275/70-17 dia 32.4" I'm leaning to B. Any good reasons NOT to use the 17's? All opinions gladly accepted. |

tire selection? for that matter you might consider a 15" wheel as there are quite a bit more options in that size. and for what its worth, you might want to check with the state that you live, cause here in utah beadlocks are not legal for street use. i have a few rock crawling buddies that have been issued fat fines for running on the street. good luck. marc |

Marc, That was an option, but the alloys are only partially trashed at this point and I wanted to preserve them with the 31" BFG AT KO's on there now. So notwithstanding the potential impossibility of finding an appropriate 17" wheel, is there any reason not to go to a bigger diameter? I like the look of the Goodyear MTR's on 17 inchers. Any wisdom on possible fitment problems; caliper clearance etc? Thanks for the feedback |

JEESH you guys, HELLO. Not ONE person has yet to offer an opinion on his question. Shawn has not asked what other tires he could run nor has he asked who makes 17'. WHile both are nice and valuable comments, how bout the question. WHY OR WHY NOT RUN 17's. We know cost is an issue. But cost not-withstanding, and assuming avalability, what performance reasons would keep you from running 17's. Will it hamper crawling performance, heavier wheel, more chance of bending, or are all these moot points with such large tires. Inquiring minds want to know. :-) Todd |

cost and selection are always the only real factors. $250 for wheels and $175 for tires, that's around $2100 (and your still only running a 32" tire) i've got a set(5) black series wheels w/ 235/85 bfg/at i'll sell you for $700 (sorry shameless plug) yes, the wheels will fit providing the wheel spacings aren't to extreme. and keep in mind that beadlocking wheels are next to impossible to balance for on-road use (don't waste your time with equal it doesn't work for these type of setups) marc

todd, with regards to your many questions, no, there are no issues with running a larger wheel. most rock crawling rigs use larger wheels to accommodate a larger tire. in this case it's a moot point because the tire options that shawn gave are no bigger in height than most people use on a 16" wheel. the only thing he is gaining, in addition to cost is a slightly wider tire (but again it's only 32" tall). so again the only real issue is cost. marc |

16" wheel will give you more tire sidewall. Beneficial iff you air down alot, plus the sidewalls will conform to the terrain better. 17" wheel will give you more stability on side hills because you will have less tire sidewall to deflect. However, you will also get less conformity to the terrain because of this. I know we're only talking about an inch here, but it makes a difference. |

Cost is becoming somewhat of a moot point as well. As car companies begin expanding wheel selections for OE applications (or from the factory), tire manufacturers are rushing to create/expand tire availability. Tires in 17" diameters where considered exotic just a few years back, but now they are quite common place and every type of tire desired is available. Wanting to put 17 inch rims (or God forbid, 18" or 19" rims on a Disco that is to be used for off roading) does not make someone automatically qualify for the bling factor. I think the big issue here is reduced sidewall height and differences for load range (D vs. E etc). Your major choices should come down to driving style and potential terrain encountered. I am running 16's w/ 265/75's, but I am also in the market for a nice 18 inch rim with a Nitto Terra Grapppler for driving on the street. I know there are greater tire selection with a 15" rim, but honestly I wanted something that looks interesting/exciting as well as performs. I know that my views may seem "bling" to some people out there, but what makes this DWeb interesting is the perspectives (each unique) that are represented and it's not right to bust the guys "balls" for wanting to run a 17" on his truck. Go with the 17's, you'll love the look and prices of the tires have dropped and will continue to drop so that shouldn't be the most pressing concern. Just my $.02 -Luke |

There's not a real point to get 17's unless you're planning on running some 37" or larger tires, and if you're going to go that route, theres a lot more to consider like beefing up the drive train and such. |
