When I start the rig from sitting for a while and start to accelerate there is a loud rushing noise like a fan or something. It stops after I get over about 20 mph and keep accelerating. It doesn't do it again until I stop completely and start again or if I'm going at low speeds with a lot of load (A/C, blower on HI, stereo on, etc).

Is this normal? It doesn't seem to affect the performance. Just curious if I should be on the lookout for something.

most likely, it's your engine fan. check your fan clutch if it bothers you.

Will it cause any damage down the road? The sound doesn't bother me - it actually sounds kind of cool. Like a 747 taking off... :-)

you should hear it -
- upon a cold start, for up to a minute,
- when you climb up a steep grade on the highway,
- when you turn on the A/C
things like that. From what you write, it sounds more or less like it.
The cold engine thing - I don't know and I haven't checked whether Rover's fan clutch works the same as the others, but the regular Hayden clutch will be stiffer when cold, then "thaw out," then stiffen up again.

it's hot out and the viscous coupling fan is locking up and cooling the engine better. it is supposed to do this.

you probably notice power loss and that it happens most on hot days.

yes there is a slight power loss when I hear the noise and on hot days usually with the AC going. Thanks for the info! One less thing to worry about...

Here I thought it was all the gas rushing by my ears from the tank to the engine.

I was told by my friend (who's a Land Rover tech) that it was sound of the compression spreading to the rear wheels. I don't know if he worded it like that, I could be wrong. But basically it was the engine pushing air to the back wheels to make them work in 4 wheel drive. Is that right?

your tech friend is half right or maybe you heard it wrong. it is actually a hot liquid rushing back to the rear wheels to make it 4x4.

the viscus fan turns on and pumps it back.
