So after reading the word 'vibe' about 347 times tonight, I'm kind of curious as to exactly what you mean. Are we talking moderately violent shuddering, noisy yet not terribly physical vibrations, or what? Maybe I have vibes... I'm pretty sure I dated a girl with vibes one time, but I don't think that's what ya'll are talking about. Help a brotha out.

Highly subjective, but for me, it's when things start to look fuzzy out the rear view mirror accompanied by a dull rumble from the nether regions.

Would this vibe be accompanied by a steering wheel shudder? Or would it feel and sound more like you have a shipment of defective... adult toys... in the back? Still wondering.

No steering wheel shudder for me. I get a slight vibe at low speeds that gets notably worse when I hit 65 then 70mph. Slight vibe like a smooth dirt road. Worse like rumble strips. Are you trying to identify a problem or just curious ?

Both. I'm fairly certain my tires are just out of balance, but getting them balanced only lasts a week or so. I've read that this is s symptom of a failing suspension. This really seems legitimate in my case as I can notice a significant bowing in my springs. Anyway, when I exceed 50 or so I get a noticable shake accompanied by a little tremor in the steering wheel.

From what you're saying, doesn't seem to be the dreaded vibe. Hopefully some new shocks, springs, steering stabilizer and some tire balancing will solve my issues. Although, I've got to say, I'm pretty stoked about swtiching driveshafts. I just hope I don't have to do it until I have a little money.

(And Yes, I am planning on replacing the shocks and springs for all of you saftey hounds. It's just kind of hard to fit them into the budget as a college student still trying to pay off the credit card debt I racked up on a rather... high maintenence... exgirlfriend.)

I am yet to own a vibration-free vehicle; but it's all relative.
Wheels out of balance or out of round produce body vibration, which is usually accompanied by rattle of loose items like door lock buttons and such. Many vehicles seem to have a body resonance near speeds about 80 mph, D1 included. Some shops are consistently bad at balancing the wheels - in my experience, my local Sears' center couldn't get any wheels/tires right while Discount tires balanced 35" mudders and they've been perfect ever since. So you may leave the shop hoping for the best and be very disappointed.
If only rear tire(s) is/are out of balance, you may not have any steering wheel vibration.
Unbalanced tire in conjunction with a dry shock produces nasty vibration.
Front wheels may shimmy, always or after a bump or something. That will make the steering wheel wobble.
Driveshaft vibration - when small, it feels like low frequency rumble (but little vibration) at higher speeds. When the driveshaft is about to give the ghost, the feeling is amazingly close to one or several cylinders' misfire. To the extent that now, anytime I get a feeling that my engine doesn't run right, I get under the vehicle and check the driveshafts. Case in point - vibration in a before-97 D1 during a moderate to hard acceleration, at speeds about 30-50 mph, is almost always a symptom of cracked rotoflex joint.
