I'm looking at getting a winch. I'm leaning towards a Warn either the new 9.5ti, HS9500 or the XD9000i. Does anyone know of any good lower costing websites?

www.gowarn.com or www.4wheelparts.com are both fine places, and I know that 4wheelparts has free shipping, I can't remember the gowarn promotion.
I just purchased a MileMarker 9000# electric for right around $400 from 4wheelparts. I can't comment on how good it is other than I know it will pull small trees from around your home if you need to do some excavating. I pulled some crazy tree that had been growing in my yard via the MileMarker and it worked just fine:-)

You might try clemson4x4 too, I've heard they'll beat any internet price.

I recently purchased a MileMarker 12,000# winch from onlinejeepparts.com. Read about it here six or so months ago. I first sent off for a CD demo disc where they had the winch pulling against some of their competitors and bought on the basis of that demo. Price was right, too, though I think it has gone up since I purchased it.

It has yet to be used in anger...unfortunately, still sitting in a box on the living room floor...every time I think about mounting it, the monsoon moves in for the weekend.

The winch appears to be a Chinese made copy of a Warn. Methinks that if any part ever broke, the appropriate Warn part would fit.

Cheers

I am looking for a light duty (and reasonably inexpensive) winch for the ARB Bar on my Disco II . I don't do much serious off roading and the winch would probably get minimal (if any) use. As I know nothing of winches, why would I want to stay away from M6000 or M/X 8000? Or, since my use will be extremely limited, are these ok?
Thanks in advance,
-Luke

Luke you might want to look at the Mile Marker 9000 electric. That is the one I have in my ARB Bill from Great Basin Rovers reccomended it to me and I have been happy with it. You can get them for half of what the Warn goes for. Around 425-475.

Monte,

http://www.clemson4wheel.com/ is where I picked up the Warn 12K. They had the best price and it arrived at my office 2.5 days after ordering via UPS.

Before I went with Clemson, I performed a price check with all the of vendors listed in http://www.discoweb.org/resources.htm and they were the lowest in price. You might have to click the "add to cart" icon to see the actual price.

Good Luck,

Paul Morgan

I don't know how much shipping is but John over at Rovertym has better prices than any of these sources! And his business caters to land rovers! I'd rather give him the business. And most places that offer free shipping just include it in there price!!! What's free about it??? He's cheaper by over a hundred bucks! Helluva nice guy too. Warn, Superwinch, Ramsey, Husky, he sells them all not just one company.

Yep, RTE is a great place for Rover Owners. JBS has taken care of me several times with my sliders and my slimline winch bumper.

When I purchased the Warn M12 back in February it was at my office for $995. Today the price at Clemson is $1019. (Remember you have to click on the add to wish list for actual price). The Warn M12 is a 134 LB winch, therefore shipping can be quite expensive. So those vendors that offer the free shipping are well worth it.

Granted, Monte is looking for something a bit smaller. I was just trying to offer a source from my experience.

can anyone way in for the novice on the pro's and con's regarding different size winches. Is an 8K lb. winch good enough for light duty purposes?

One thing to consider on "light duty" winches is the amp draw or gear ratio. A winch with a 470:1 ratio will have a lower amp draw (and have a slower line speed) than a 265:1. Amp draw will be an important attribute if you are only using one battery.

BTW, the MileMarker 12,000# was $630, including shipping.

What if the first time you need it you're stuck in a hole with thick sticky mud? Is an 800lb with a snatch block enough? I don't know. You can get an 8000 lb winch for around $500 and the 9,000 lb. winches seem to be closer to $800, so its a big difference

well, figure the weight of your truck, then the winch is supposed to be able to pull 1 1/2 times that weight. So, a fully outfitted disco, with all the offroad extras, camping gear, tools, spares, etc, will be weighing in probably between 5k - 5 1/2k lbs. Now, do you want to use a winch that is rated just at the "recommended" ratio, or do you want to use something that you know will unstuck you (that is why you are buying a winch, right?) An old saying that Kyle has is (and I won't quote this cause i don't know it exactly) but basically, have you ever heard someone say on the trail "I have too much winch?"

i understand the theory behind "you can never have too much wench", though there is a difference between inadequate, adequate, and excessive. So witch winches fall into witch categories? When I am on the trail, it's light duty with not a great load of gear, if this helps.
-Luke
if anyone is into pistols here, I understand inadequate to be 9MM, adequate to be .40 or .45 cal., and excessive to be .50 cal. The .50 cal is fun to shoot once, but no one wants to use it all the time.

Luke,

As Robbie said, a general rule of thumb is 1.5 times the GVW. For a Discovery, an 8,000 lb winch is marginally adequate. A 9,000 lb winch will give you a much more comfortable safety margin.

Thanks,

Luke, your analogy doesn't apply in this situation. You may not want a .50 cal all the time, but I've never heard anybody say, "man, I wish I had a smaller winch because this one is just too big for me." That's retarded. Get the biggest winch you can afford. Don't get an 8K winch, it WILL fail you at some point, get at least 9K or bigger.

BTW, GVW for a stock 95 Discovery is 6018lbs. So if it's totally outfitted, PLUS the weight of all that mud you're trying to get pulled from...that's a lot more than 5k. John at RoverTym has the Warn 9.5ti for $925--that's what I'm about to buy. www.rovertym.com . Don't settle for anything but the best--you'll thank yourself when you get into your first "situation."

Just installed a Milemarker 12000 lb electric winch and I love it. Plus with the $500 dollars I saved I'm adding sliders!

I just checked out the truckfarm site, aren't the milemarker winches hydraulic? I was told by someone at desert rat to stay away from hydraulic winches because they can stress your power steering pump and cannot work if your engine isn't turning over. For the limited wheeling I do I will probably start with a Hi-Lift. Then get a winch/bumber combo when the lease is up.

Guys,
Thanks for all the information. My whole point about the gun analysis was to get what was adequate. It seems to me that going with the 9K (or bigger) is the way to go. I guess I wanted to have a nice balance between size and weight as well as price while still getting a winch that will get me out of a sticky situation. Once again DWeb has been invaluable in my quest for LandRover (and general off road) knowledge. One remaining question though, and I don't say this in a flip manner, but many here have been tauting Warn winches (which is the way I will probably go unless I am swayed in another direction), but in a situation of Warn vs. MileMarker, are the material differences only in the name, or is it in the quality as well. It amazes me that some guys are getting milemarkers for $500 while the equivalent Warn is a $1000. So what's the scoop?
Regards,
-Luke

Luke, there have been arguments over and over again about which winch to go with and why. Everybody has an opinion or a different reason why one winch is better than another. Just go with what you think you need and what you can fit into that ARB.

Paul

I see the folks at Truck Farm have a Land Rover 109" Wagon that they are working on as a project vehicle.

Hey Luke, you should talk with Matt Peters at Peters Offroad in Salem (Rt 14) - http://www.petersoffroad.com Stop by on your way back to Cleveland one day.

He can explain all of this, show you some winches, let you know what will fit your bumper, etc. Plus if you buy from him you'll have somewhat-local support and no shipping.

He's a great guy to do business with and knows is stuff.

Sorry to chime in on this, but since we are talking about winches. Has anyone had experience with a Hydrolic vs Electric Winches?

I know, a huge can of worms, but I am just curious. If you have worked with on know someone who has had one and used one.

I purchased my winch thru www.SummitRacing.com
Their prices were so much lower than anyone elses prices. Free shipping too. Arrived within 3 days. They seemed to have every winch out there in stock available for immediate shipment.
