To any of you who might be considering a vacation to Glacier National Park or this area, please be advised that we are evacuating the park today due to several large forest fires in and near the park. Check the following websites or others for updates. www.nps.gov - the home page for the National Park Service www.dailyinterlake.com - the newspaper in Kalispell, MT |

shit! sorry to hear that William. wondered if you were ever going to chime in about your experiences while you're there. hopefully they don't get too out of hand as in Yellowstone a few years back. Going to the Sun road closed!! That's pretty bad. That road needs all the help it can get until the rehap project starts. thanks for the info.. |

Here's an update: the west side of Glacier NP is still closed. Still have fires burning and not letting anyone in on the west, mostly as a precautionary measure. No major structural damage yet, hopefully there won't be any if we can keep control and if Mother Nature takes pity on us. The east side of the park is still open: St. Mary, Rising Sun, Two Medecine, and other areas, even up to Logan Pass from the east side. Keep checking the websites for updates. |

Here are some photos of our fires. These are still burning, though most of the park has been re-opened to the public now.

Man, that is terrible. But I guess that's nature's way of cleaning out the underbrush. Isn't an occasional burn part of the life cycle of a forest? |

John, Some of the fires in Glacier were allowed to burn because they didn't directly affect either human safety or structures. Others have been vigorously controlled because they did directly affect safety and/or structures. Yes, fire is a part of the natural ecology, both here in the forests and out on the Great Plains. Under controlled situations, fires are often set to burn off the weeds and other undesirable plant materials. |
