Hey All, This is a very simple question, but I need some help. While I've replace and repaired many components through the years, I've never worked on brakes. My brakes on my 01 Disco squeal fairly loudly. There is no noise at all for the first few stops from a cold start. Then there is lous squealing when pressing light to moderate on the brakes. The sqeal goes away when I press down harder. All of the noise sounds like it is coming from the front. Is this something where I just need to knock out some brake dust from between the pads and the rotors? Or is there more to it than that? Thanks a Ton. |

Take the pads out and coat the back of them with Copper coat. |

you can get anti-squeal brack coating at Auto -Zone, the you could try semi metallic brake pads if you don't already have them, but you should probably just get used to it mine squeal and i've tried alot of things to get them to stop. to no evail. |

I just fixed the squealing on our '00 DII. At least I hope it's fixed for a while. The dealer tried to blame the faulty hubs on our squealing brakes, but that's another story. To fix this, I pulled the pads and coated the back of them as well as using disc brake grease on the little spring at the top of the pad. Also, if you look at the EDGE of the metal portion of the pad(not the friction surface edge), you should see a shiny spot where the pad touches the caliper housing. There are 2 spots on each end of the pad. Lightly grease these portions, too. I'm trying this CRC Disc Brake Quiet stuff - comes in a small bottle and is bright orange(kinda ugly, tho). After it's put on, let the pad sit out of the housing for about a good half hour. Then carefully reinstall the pads. One other thing I did on the fronts was use an angle grinder to bevel the leading edge of the pad slightly. Of course, wear eye protection and a respirator. We've been fighting with the squealing pads for weeks now and this may have finally solved it all. Jason. '00 Disco. '95 Rangie LWB. |

Jason, I tried for months to get the dealership in Tulsa to remedy squeaking brakes on my '97 XD. The best that they could come up with was that ALL Rover brakes squeaked. Finding that unacceptable, I purchased a set of premium pads from O'Reilly Auto Parts, which are guaranteed never to squeak. Four months later, I still have not heard a single squeak from the brakes. Good Luck |

Paul- We were told that most Rover brakes squeak, too. Our problem was they'd squeal constantly when not applied and would change pitch when applied. It was so bad we couldn't drive with the windows open and the music had to be loud. I can understand an occasional squeak, but ours was constant. Besides trying to blame the ABS issue(a hub problem covered under warranty by another dealer) on the pads, the dealer(Willow Grove, PA - a lot of recent complaints by other people as well) tried to get us to pay for a whole brake job saying the "aftermarket" pads may have damaged the rotors. What BS! We may look into other types of pads when replacing them next time... Jason. |
