My exhaust is rusting off like everyone else's, but should I replace it? I know both the muffler and resonator are on their last layers, but I beleive the cats are still OK. Anyone have any experience going without the resonator, or without both resonator and muffler, and just running straight pipes after cats? I don't know how loud this would be, like a full-size domestic truck with dual Flowmasters, or louder. I live in South Carolina, where they no longer inspect vehicles, so as long as its not a sound violation or irritates the neighbors, its OK. Any experience would be appreciated.

The resonator you will be fine with out, but you will need the muffler. TRUST ME mine went to shit and it was pretty loud.

How long does a stock exhaust last? I've been wanting to replace mine with a performance set up but don't want to replace it while it is still in good shape.

Mine is a 1996 that I bought one year ago, with about 96k on the odometer. I've looked at the resonator, which has the outer layer of metal peeling off. I'm assuming that it is the same case with the muffler. I guess how long your exhaust lasts depends on where you live. Down here in the South, it rarely snows, so there is no salt on the ground to corrode the underside of you LR. If you live where salt is prevalent, I'm sure it will last considerably shorter lifespan.

Dean, what muffler did you replace the factory muffler with? I'm assuming that just replacing the muffler wouldn't be too expensive to replace.

I replaced my exhaust (cat back) at about 90k on
my '96 D1 with a borla ss one piece system.
It is a bit louder than stock at low speeds but has a nice deep growling sound (not the high
pitched, annoying whine of the cheaper aftermarket ones).
On the highway, it sounds about the same as the
stock one.

I've had Borla exhaust systems on nearly every one of my previous cars i've owned, and they are really high quality systems. I also believe they are probably the best sounding exhaust systems on the market providing the perfect level of sound and performance. A big plus is that they are all built using T304 aircraft grade stainless which will last longer than your vehicle, or you will ever last in this world.

I'm interested in a Borla also, but someone told me I'd be happier with a Falcon system, as it would be more "stock" in sound, unlike the Falcon which is loud. I kinda like the loud, deep sound myself...anyone have any experience with Falcon?

I have never even heard of Falcon and I have been doing research on performance upgrades for quite sometime. I am not a fan of the Borla system, so I think I am going to find an automotive performance parts store, have them reccomend a muffler (based on back pressure, muffler size, tone volume, and # of chambers desired, etc...), buy some nice stainless tips, then have a reputable shop put it all together. You could probably create a nice kit with the sound you want, tips that fit your style, and something that will last as long as you own your truck for the same price/cheaper than the Borla kit. I know this might seem unusual to some of the DWEB members, doing something for the look and sound, but there is nothing wrong with a competent off road vehicle being the best looking truck at the mall as well.
Just my $.02

Good point Luke. They advertise Falcon at Atlantic British if you want to check it out. Let us know how your system works out!

Luke, check out the flowmaster site http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/indexf5.html they have sound and good decriptions of their mufflers. The "70" series seems to be what you might be looking for.

Does anyone know of the stock inlet diameter for a muffler on a DII? (ie 2.5, 2.25...)

My muffler was also falling apart. I figure it would give it nice sound if I ran a straight 2" pipe from the cats al the way out.............. big mistake that Disco is so loud it is embarrassing plus I can not have a conversation with the passenger. Now Now Now I ought to save money to install a muffler.

I'm running a cat back NRP exhaust on a 1994 Disco and it's louder than stock at idle, but [IMHO] not as loud as the Borla [heard a demo on a '96 Disco] at idle. At speed [70-ish] both systems sound great! The NRP system clearly gave me a little boost in power [don't think it was the 10% in HP that some ads claim...]

I've got a '98 DI and the resonator and muffler were in rough shape. I replaced the muffler with the Flowmaster and cranked him up and it sounded deep, but not loud. I removed the resonator and put a 3 inch stainless steel tip all the way through and made it much louder/deeper and just the right tone. I also live in the south and experience the typical loud ass chevy, and this is no where in that range. If you are wanting to maintain the stock sound but add a little grunt, i'd advise you to leave the resonator on and put a flowmaster, but if you want something to growl when you kick it, i'd remove the resonator. Either way i'd definately reccomend the Flowmaster over any other exhaust i've heard on a Discovery. I've also had many compliments on the extremely clean sound.

A muffler shop should be able to fit a straight pipe where the resonator used to be. I am running NRP cats on my 4.6 Disco with a Flowmaster 40 series and custom pipe to clear the extra suspension travel. In hindsight, I would have done the 50 series. I have NRP mufflers on my stock Classic and actually like that sound better. A Borla on a LWB Classic with a 4.2 is loud, to me.

Ahh, a Borla on a 4.2 LWB - that's the setup I'm running...

At first, it was a bit too loud. I really considered taking it off for something quieter. That was 2 years ago. It's actually pretty nice now - a nice mellow bass at low RPM's and seems to get quieter as it flows more at higher RPM's.

Construction and fit is excellent. Only the very rear hanger required a little adjustment with a wrench.

It's also kinda fun to have this big classic truck with a nice rumble. I like it now....
