From what I hear, the newer the better as for as D1's are concerned. But honestly that's just my $.02 and I am sure people on here have Disco's of all years with pros and cons. If it were me, I would take each truck as a case by case situation and in no way limit my search just because of production year.

get a 95, less electronics to go wrong and the 3.9 i have heard is better then the 4.0, since it has less problems. That is what I have heard.

The newer the better, the later years you'll more than likely be able to pick up a dealer certified or a one owner dealer maintained vehicle. Problem with disco's is they are either wonderful runners or POS's. The POS's usually come from lack of proper maintence. Regular good maintence will keep these complicated vehicles running forever. If your not getting a truck from a LR dealer consider a pre-purchase inspection by a LR dealer. I have a 95 D1, the 94-95 are simpler trucks with less electronics, 96-99 have more stuff, but also have the excellent obdII computer. Drive the 96-99 and they feel smoother. If I where to get a new discovery tommorrow, I'd look for a low mile 98-99 D1 or 99-00 D2 (with the cdl stud and coil springs) from a dealer under a factory warrenty. They might be more expensive, but the warr. will rid you of potential headaches. D1's are better offroad because of the cdl, shorter overhangs, overall simpler design, D2's would be the better towing rig and everyday truck. But always consider how your using it, a d1 is better in say the rubicon trail, but you wouldn't notice a difference on a fire road. D2's take a lift easier and fit bigger tires without as many problems. Way more offroad parts are availible for d1's, but as the d2 prices come down I'm sure that will change. I don't tow with mine so I can't offer any help there. I just know when I drive my buddys 98 it seems nicer than my 95.

Disco II are better and quieter on road. The engine is also more responsive. It also has Bosch electronics as compared to the British stuff.

But with that said it too can have many problems and the Disco 1999 prior could be equally good if you looking for a off road beast.I love my Rover but know there is a lot that can go wrong as they are over-engineered vechiles.

I would recommend getting a warranty at any cost either from Landrover or from a reputed vendor.I researhed for a while before getting a Disco II.

I don't think Bosch was on board the Disco until '03. Could be wrong, but that's my inclination.

Bosch was very much in place in 1999 D2's. Also, I don't think dealers will CPO a D1 since they're now over 4 years old. Seems all the CPO Discos I've seen lately are 2000 and newer. I would hardly call a Rover over engineered unless you're talking Rangies. But, IMO, the D1 is much easier to work on than the D2 since there are fewer sealed parts (wheel bearings, u-joints, ABS sensors, fuel filters).

I had this same question about a year ago and decided to go with a 99 D1 that was "certified". It has been an ok rover. A lot of leaks, had the heads redone alreay (All under warrenty) and now she's running great. Just took a 1200+ mile trip up to Main and back with a bit of camping gear and it was a great trip. No problems, and averaged almost 17mpg with a loaded adventure rack. I'd say it depends on how much you want to spend. I've heard many people state 97's were good years for some reason. If I were to do it again, I'm not sure if I would have spent the money for a certified one. Probably just find a nice low mileage one either here or on LRX.com from someone that took very good care of theirs. Good luck.

I was looking 99 d1 that was certified about a month ago. I think mileage has alot to do with certification qualification. Getting a vehicle inspection is a good idea no matter what.

Land Rovers are over engineered, look how heavy duty the suspension parts are for a road car, most offroad drivers really don't need to do much to one, if anything at all to have a very capable on road and off road rig. True in essence they are simpler than some vehicles and easy to work on, but they have large and complicated maintence instructions, don't follow that plan and it will bite you in the ass in the long run. Plus d2's are way more complicated with the sls, etc, ace and all that other crap.

I can think of reasons to get a D1 over a D2 and vice versa. But ACE, SLS, and ETC being complicated isn't one of them. Remember that ACE and SLS are options. You can still pick up a D2 without ACE or SLS. ETC is not much more complicated than ABS. And the D1 already has ABS.

I was told to look for a 98 or 99 D1, where I was Disco hunting. I was told by 98 most of the bugs had been worked out and these years are the best of the worst.
