what amp rating should i convert to if installing dual winches on the rover. or will the stock altenator work fine. and is it possible to rebuild the alt to make it a higher rating or do you have to get a whole new replacement. just asking.

What year Disco? I would think Disco2's would be fine. D1's should also be okay but depends on how often you plan to use the winch. Even if you have a dual winch setup you'll only use one at a time.

Just out of curiosity, what will you be doing running two winches at the same time? Just asking.

And why not just get a dual battery setup (with isolator) and run one winch on one and the other winch on the other?

Winches draw quite a bit more than most any alternator can put out. All a big alternator is going to do is recharge your batteries faster.

two bateries i would say with cut of switches, to each, keep one as a back up just in case one goes down while winching, split charge system etc. just link em all together with welding cable, thats what we do, but if you are really worried about battery power get a hydraulic winch and run it of the power steering pump. only prob loose engine loose hydraulics, big debate over here about the benifits of each. superwinch x9 myself and had no probs with that though. guess that doesnt really answer the original question but thought i might get involved in a few discussions.

ya i will or might go with a hydrlic in the front and put the electric in the back. hydralics are a bit more expensive though.

Micky Dee,

You have a rear winch on a Disco, Pray describe/post pics.

As far as the issue of alternators are concerned, its smarter to invest in a deep cycle battery rather than a high output alternator, as previously said, the alternator is only to recharge, the bigger it is, the faster it can recharge your battery. Best this is to slap in a second battery (dual optimas are nice) with either a manual or automatic split system. I buddy of mine ran a 65 AMP alternator on his Nissan Patrol with dual winches during competitions with 3 optimas.

When you are using BOTH winches at the same time, make sure to turn off ALL electrical accessories are off, and that you're RPMs are above 2,500.

Micky Dee...SHOW YOUR _______ !!!

they are on a range rover classic. and for the rear winch i just welded it to a reese trailer hitch and stuck it in the receiver. its a KISS method.

If you do decide to upgrade the alternator aswell, I would recommend the Premier Power Welder 185 amp Rover alternator, which can be also used to power their stick welder. Here's the links

Best Price I've found - http://www.mistymountainrover.com/ppw.htm
