I've been getting these Messenger pop-ups in Windows XP and they've been driving me nuts. Browser and email don't need to be up for these "alerts" to appear. Apparently, these are not information-gathering pop-ups, and are therefore not illegal at this time. My wife's friend sent us this link, which explains how to get into your control panel to adjust them out.

This will not fix "pop-unders", only the Messenger-based windows. I'd looked into several of the $20 - $25 software "offers" to fix these Messenger pop-ups. If you're as savy as I'm not, don't get suckered into buying this three click fix from these extortionists!

Cheers,

e

A minor update to my post and link - any IT or NA guys know if this might disable low-battery warnings on laptops as a side-effect? Seems like a very minor inconvenience if that's the only one!

Yeah, that does work. And yeah, local software running that makes a call to the windoze messenger service will also be affected. No biggie though...

I fixed it for free a few months ago. I can't believe people are making money by selling programs to stop them. The pop ups were driving me nuts and sometimes they even locked up my entire computer.

YOU CAN DO THIS FOR FREE AND IT STOPS ALL POP UPS OF ANY KIND!! :-) :-) This is all you do:

Click on the Start button in the taskbar
-- Open Control Panels
-- Go to "Administrative Tools" (XP users may need to go to "Performance and Maintenance" first, then "Administrative Tools")
-- Double-click on "Services"
-- Scroll down to "Messenger"
-- Double-click on "Messenger"
-- Change the Startup type to "Disabled"
-- Click "Stop" to stop the service

You have to be signed on as the administrator to do this. I have not had a single pop up ad since I disabled mine a few months ago.

Good Luck! Jamie

Each solicitation I received was forwarded to the BBBOnline - I expect nothing to come of it, but I did feel better about it afterward! Not only do these aholes solicit you without remedy for removal, but they actually tell you that the only way to stop receiving such ads is with their "program". What a scam.

Cheers,

If you want to put the brakes on just general popups, download the Beta version of the Google Toolbar. Piece of cake.

Jamie is absolutely right for "Messenger" type pop-ups. XP users can type in a command line (In the "Run..." box of the Start Menu)

services.msc
Double click "Messenger"
Click "Stop"
Click "Disable"
Click "Apply"

No more Messenger (the majority by far) pop-ups...EVER

Yep, the action that Jamie suggest is exactly correct. I haven't had one of those winpopup messages since I did that.
