That's a great thread, first you get to see someone's trashed H2, then you can read the VW board's diatribe about real-offroad vehicles and such. The comments about the Defender and such were rather amusing. Maybe I need to hop over there more, I didn't realize it was such a fountain of info-I only use it to figure out what to do with our 1.8T Jetta when the warrenty goes. r- Ray |

Something that could not have happened to a vehicle with live axles, I'd guess. I loved how that driveshaft just sheared right off between the two CV joints. Brilliant! |

Meh, a bunch of VW drivers trying explain to one another about off roading, something which they no nothing of. Just because the military uses Humvees doesn't mean they are worth a damn for off roading, granted they are a great in battle with a .50 calber Browning machine gun on top, or a TOW missle, but for going off roading.......eh. |

Very good point about the Humvee/H1. We've got lots of them in our club and they tout themselves (of course) as being "The Ultimate Go Anywhere Vehicle"..... On the plus-side, they do have amazing clearance provided by their unique gear-driven hubs: 16" of clearance....you can lay on the ground and it'll pass right over you. This comes in pretty handy with SOME nasty obstacles and it's excellent in the mud because they don't have to push their axles/differentials through the bulk. The bottom is like a sled-bed and can be dragged over boulders, and the CTIS is pretty neat. They are built pretty darn tough/rugged and will absorb a lot of abuse. Outstanding side-slope ability and significantly more cargo room then a Jeep. The approach/departure angle is excellent too. On the downside: they have long wheelbases and are overly wide. Not very nimble, can't choose their lines as easily and are a costly thing to maintain. The suspension has limited articulation (for which they claim they don't need and is the biggest misconceived short-coming of the vehicle). They weigh a lot and can often only be towed/winched/hauled/recovered by their own kind. As with anything, the driver makes up the biggest component of success/failure and each vehicle has it's strong points. Plans for an H4 (after the H3 comes out) call for something the size of a Defender, a bit wider, a bit less "butt" hanging off the rear (better departure angle) and all the features of the H1. Concept sounds great...but will they actually follow through with it???? doubtful!

Shouldn't he be able to just drive out? I mean, H2's are supposed to be albe to drive on 3 wheels right? And isn't that funky skid plate for SKIDDING, you know, when the wheels fall off you should be able to wet the grass down and drive away like a boat! HA! I knew that undercarriage was too weak for that truck as soon as I spotted it in the cars show all rusted and with shocks that looked like the belong on my Saab, not a truck. |
