I posted recently about my 99 Disco having trouble shifting into low gear. At this point, my best guess is heat? When the engine/drivetrain is cool, it shifts very easily between low and high. When it heats up, I can't get the shifter to budge. Any ideas? |

I just had all the fluids changed in both differentials, the trans and the transfer box (if that's what you call it). Gearbox was low, but no change in status - I still can't shift. Mechanic said the linkage was not frozen and that I needed to work the shifter more often. Kenny |

Out of curiosity, what method are you using to shift the transfer box from high into low range and vice versa? |

I follow the instructions on the dash. I've tried every speed from 0-5 and starting from both reverse and drive. It seems to be loosening up as the mechanic told me to shift it frequently. We'll see how things "work out". Kenny |

Update: A LR mechanic told me that there was a solenoid switch that is designed to prevent the transfer box from being shifted manually(I guess from underneath by a thief who could tow the vehicle away). He said the switch may have become heat sensitive which might explain the shifter being absolutley impossible to move when I get to normal operating temperature. There is also some additional randomness to the problem as I have twice been able to shift OK at normal temperature. I haven't had the "stuck" shifter when the engine was cold yet. He said the switch was not easy to get to and could be looked at for possible replacement at the shop. Any additional thoughts on this? Kenny |
