If you could choose any rack reguardless of price which would you choose? The rack would see its main heavy load usage with family trips, but would also be used on the trail. I really like the Hannibals, but the price is a bit much. Thanks. |

I think the Safety Devices racks are the best. I have the Adventure rack on my truck, and am nothing but pleased with its durability, loading space, and aesthetic qualities. |

I agree with Adam. I just purchased a 1999 Disco that came with the Safety Devices rack. It's perfect. Here are some pics of my Thule bike rack mounted to it. http://www3.pbase.com/jamooche/disco Jamil |

would concur with previous posts. they really look great compared to most others , got a home made rack at present saving for the day when a safety devices rack is affordable. i believe they make a gutter mounted and thru roof mounted if you have a roll cage, a la the camel trophy racks, www.safetydevices.co.uk |

Get a genuine land rover adventure rack and put diamond plate flooring on it. |

Cost me 300 for the diamond plate and all the fabrication. A local metal fab shop outside Chicago did the work. They did a great job. It is slotted around every bar to achieve maximum durability. |

Are any useful racks available that are easily usable and removable without actually drilling into one's truck? What if anything do you use the standard roof rails for, short of a rack? Thanks. |

I don't know of a rack that you have to drill into "one's truck". Most of them come off pretty easy. However most of them need two people to remove. |

If anyone is interested I am just finishing a write up on the Checkerplate install on the Adventure Rack. Let me know. TrevorH |

I would be interested too. Though I am leaning toward the expanded steel flooring, your setup looks real good. -Reed |

What do you mean by expanded steel? Is that like grill material? |

I recently bought a 2002 DII...I tried to fit my Yakima 1A racks with extensions...got the front one on...the wind roar/buzzing is too loud to have a conversation...before I work on the back rack which needs cutting I am curious if anyone else has had the same problem...they have never made noise on any truck that I had them on...Yakima says buy the wind deflector which I would rather not do. answers out there? |

If you do expanded metal, you'll need to do serious rust-inhibitor work to keep the brown drips from showing up on your roof, that is why more than a few will recommend the aluminum. I had three powdercoat sessions at once on my raised expanded metal flooring to give me a bit longer before rust will rear its ugly head. Some pictures of it here: http://expeditionfilmpartners.com/adventures/expamericas/mexcan/disco1.html |
