I'm going to be purchasing new tires in the somewhat near future and I'm researching which Mud/ good AT tires last a fair amount of miles. I'm currently looking at BFG AT TKO's, BFG MT, Goodyear MTR's and the Cooper SST's in 235/85/16's. I'm not expecting them to last as long as my XPC's which have gotten me 52K, but I'd like them to last a good 30 or so thousand miles.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Zak

MTs wear much faster than ATs. BFG has a very good reputation for long-wearing tires. I can't really comment on the other brands you listed.

I have the Goodyear MTRs on the Disco. 15K so far and they seem to be wearing OK. I hoping to get 30K to 35K out of them.

Thanks,
Mike B.

I have a set of Bridgestone MTs with 25K miles and they have just now passed their half-life. I anticipate another 10-15K before I replace them.
And yes, they do howl for sure on the road.

Zak,
I highly recommend BFG ATs, I have gotten up to 90K on them in the past and I have 10K now on my D2. By far the best tire, you spend a little more $$ but it pays off in the long run.

Zak I have Coopers STT but in a discontinued size 750-r 16 Third year of use with the xpc's running as snow season tires....So I reckon on a little under 20k so far and lots of tread left. One tire suffered rock damage and is now a spare due to sidewall blister.
The tires have been great, in the mud and rocks of New England
Price was a big factor when I bought them $94 v $144 per tire.
Few MTs will ever been worn out, rather see life ending damage from rocks sometimes cheaper is better.....
$44 MT remolds anyone?
:-)

Thanks for the info guys. Today I had to add another tire to the list, the Dunlop Radial Rover RT. Read a lot of positive things about it here.

For price I like the Dunlop and Cooper. For longevity I like the BFG AT, but I'm reall wanting the Goodyear MTR's. Too bad they're so pricey.

I found that costco has the BFG AT's for under $130 a tire, while it will be tough to get the Cooper or Dunlops for under that after mounting etc.

Thanks again everyone, and Greg, don't worry Randy has that pole nice and oiled up for you! Smartass. And where you been?

I've had the BFG AT and they wear really well. The MTR's that I have now wear really well too. A buddy of mine just got 55k-60k out of his MTR's. NO JOKE. The problem that I find is that the more you are off-road, the more chunks are taken out of the tire. Tires with chunks wear very fast.

Zak, my GY MTR's have about 17k miles on them and they have at least half of their tread left. If I get a chance this weekend, I'll measure them and the spare (not used) and figure out the exact mileage.

I can't spend much time on the internet at work anymore, so I haven't been responding much lately on here or phillyrovers.

Greg writes, "Zak, I suggest you save your money for a snorkle instead!" ROFLMAO!!! Sorry folks, inside joke.

Zak, go with the MTR. You will be happy.

Paul

Seems like a lot of people have gotten pretty good mileage out of the MTR's. I'll have to see what I can get them for around here. A local place wanted $230 a tire! I told him I saw them for $130 on tire rack, then he tells me he was looking at the wrong number and they are $175. Still to high.

Paul and Greg, where in the Ghetto did you buy your man tires from?

BFG MTs - I put 20k miles on them with little signs of wear.

Zak,

Every joint in the Philly area quoted me $195 - $215 per 265/75R16 MTR. After purchase, mounting, and super expensive PA taxes; I paid $935.40 for 5 MTR's which comes out to around $187 per.

They are not a cheap tire, but you get what you pay for.

Wow, very prices tires Paully. I've found a few places that will mount the MTR's for around $160 or so per tire. I can get the BFG MT's for less than $150 a tire so they are looking good right now. I've also heard a lot of good things about them as well.

I've been drowling over a new set of MT/R's but the wife always comes up with more "practical things we need to by, before i get a new set of tires for my rig".... =:-(

anyway, www.4x4groupbuy.com has 235/85/16

MT/R = $136 p/t
BFG MT KM's = $135.99 p/t

hope this helps... btw if you get a set for your rig... send me a pic so i can dream about how they look and ride on the trails....

Sams club for tires. $9 per tire for mount and balance and road hazard which is nice if you cut your sidewall, you get new tire. I just got priced 285/75 MTR for $165

Paul, you paid too much.

Zak,

If you want to pay a little less, go to tirerack.com and order them for delivery at a local shop.

Another option is to request a quote from tiresplus.com. About 150 per tire from them.

James.......... fuck off........... Paul paid the going rate for tires installed in the Philly area.

Damn, there is a lot of love here. It's amazing how much love a tire can bring out in a man. :-)

Yeah James, I am sure there is a big difference in cost between your part of Virginia and where I was living in philly. I am back in NC now and our local Sam's Club doesn't have them. You definately got a good deal.

I bought my 265/75/16 GY MTR's in Philly at a goodyear store, and paid $149.00 per tire, plus $11 for mounting and balancing.

I took in a price quote from www.tiresplus.com and they matched it for me.

Not if you go to Pep Boys. The tires will say Futura on them in stead of Cooper, but they are really Cooper tires, rebranded for Pep Boys. I just got my second set of 235/85/16 Enforcer MT's for $97.99/tire.

Axel,

How have your Enforceres held up? I know Chris V.C's did not hold up very well out west and he's not going to buy them again. Just curious how yours have held up.

Thanks guys!

The previous set went through Moab twice, Hole in the Rock, Rubicon and Dusy, and held up ok.

Wow, thats impressive. How would you rate the road hum from them? My disco is also a daily driver so I need a tire that is pretty good all around. The XPC's are pretty loud, so I don't mind if they are as loud as them or a little louder. How do the enforcers handle in the rain?

Thanks a lot Axel

Impressive indeed, besides the rain, how do the Enforcers do in the snow and mud?

thanks

Like most MT's they are relatively quiet until they get worn down to about 50%, then the hum starts getting a bit more noticeable. But that's what the radio volume button is for.
I tend to avoid mud, the most serious mud I went through with the previos set, was in Canada (seen on the Back East video), and they did ok. I didn't have any problems during the winter here in NJ either.

I keep mentioning the Futura tires, because they are probably one of the best deals around. When you do drive offroad a lot, you will eventually cut a sidewall or throw a lug and thus need new tires before the thread is completely worn down. It hurts a lot less to replace a Futura than it does to replace one of the more expensive alternatives.

One last question about the Enforcers, what does Pep Boys have for warranty? Do they have something like a Road Hazard Warranty like Costco?

thanks again.

Yes, they have a road hazard warranty as well. You have to read the fine print though, those kind of warranties usually have exclusions for off road damage.

Axel I didn't know we had that same love of the Cooper STT/enforcer MT tires!
Man I am so happy someone else sees off road tires the same way.
mine were $94 each $470 for a set plus mounting
BFG MT $144 = $720 or $250 less. And between us we've BTDT off road...
Go COOPER GO ENFORCER!

I will second the Futuras. I have had them for about 18,000 miles and I have been very pleased on and off road...really good bang for your buck. I can measure the tread wear with the spare later.

I did it!!!

after yrs... litterally (ask CraigK) i finally pulled the trigger on a set of GY MT/R's. i got 5 for $500 total (i still have to have them mounted and bal, but i can take it to a shop that will do that for $12 p/t).

after searching forever.... i found an ebay post that was local. the guy just bought a Rubicon and decided that the first thing he wanted to do was replace the tires with bigger tires. good deal for him cause it means that his new BFG's prolly only cost him $50-60 p/t. good for me cause i got 1 brand new MT/R (spare) and 4 near new (so near new that they still had the little rubber "whiskers" on them) the only Minor drawback was that they are 245/75/16's and my first choice would have been 235/85... but hell i got new MT/R's FINALLY... next is to have them mounted.

over the last 18 months i've collected a set of steel wheels that i will make my "off road set".

If i wasnt MC'ing my cousins wedding... next weekend would have been a "Hollister or Cow Mtn" Trip!

KEN

BTW... YES my wifed did Bitch to HIGH hell... got the "damnit where are your priorities..." lecture... at near "stadium volume"!!!!
