so how do i reduce gearing from stock on a lt77 box, running 235 85 kuhmo mt`s to get it back to near standard, fed up with slow uphill getaways, of course it is never gonna be fast but ! have been told put a 110 transfer box in and change the adaptor plate to the prop shaft ? is it better to do that or change dif ratios ? cause i am thinking of going up a tire diameter when i get my rte body lift sent over , allready got a 2" explorer pro comp shock and spring job, so dont want to suffer even more with the bigger tires i want, any ideas. as far as i know everything is standard in the gearbox , transfer box dept. but dont ask me anything about the ratios , havnt got a clue on that, but speedo under reads by about 11 mph at 70 mph, is good on a nice flat road as ive had it reading 115 mph but that is not my main concern, usually potter around at 70 max. not into the speed thing i just wondered what it would read.

differential gears! GBR 4.10
here in utah they are a must have!
from what i gather from your post, the low range kit you're refering to will not help much in high range. a low range kit is made for the transfer case, but that is used in low range, low speed driving conditions.
check Bills site: GBR
read the ring and pinion section, this may help in understanding your options.
believe me, i feel your pain, there's nothing worse than getting passed on a climb by geo metro.
the diff gears will help the shift patterns return close to where they were stock.
i put a set in a 99' D1 (TT/DL combo) w/ 33" tires and the thing is silky smooth.
hope that helps,
marc

Colin, if you want bigger tires than 235/85 check out the wing flares that Devon 4x4 have -they ain't far from you in Exeter. these will allow you 34 inch tires without raising the Center of Gravity as much as a body lift will.

thanks marc have had a quck look at gbr site , will get into it in more detail when time permits.
it looks very informative, i must admit when it comes to ratios and things i am at a loss ,
so a little more research i think, as it is the sort of job i only want to have to do once and get it right first time, and you hear so many differing opinions,
thx for the help

jim,
yep, its really not as scary as people think.
but i must confess, i'm a mechanic by trade.
if you think you want to try yourself drop me an email, i'll steer you in the right directions.
i've written a partial article and have several pictures on what type of gear patterns to look for, install tips etc.
where in slc do you live?
marc

Colin on gearing, with all those 1 in 4 sorry 25% hills you have around there, and 235s an adjustment is called for...
Over in the UK
www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/
seems to be very popular and has a great web site...
If your transfer box is leaking (if not why not) then swapping it out for a defender geared T box will kill two birds with one stone
regearing the diffs to 4.1 will have a similar 13% change in gearing
Heck Ashcroft will even fit them for you and give you a wonderful day or two in Luton
(you've always wanted to go there haven't you)

thanks chris,
thats what i was thinking about a defender box out of a 110, i think the only other thing that needs to change is the adaptor plate to the prop shaft , or so i havebeen told, and doing the change might also alleviate some of my drivetrain clonking as i think my trans box is worn so it seems the best way to go i think, i could then poss go up another tire diameter and not notice to much over standard, dont fancy a day out in luton much , ha ha.
thanks anyway
cheers
