How do you reset the service engine light? Do you need a dealer supplied tool or can it be done at home?

Check under Tech section for the blow by blow method for resetting the RED service engine light.
@52,000 comes on for emission check and again @110,000

so what happens if you reset the check engine light @ 52 without getting the emmissions checked - my dealer wants $300 - i would rather just reset the light and forget about it

Just clears the light...nothing happens...you'll "know" if your O2 sensors, cat. converter, etc. are going bad (i.e., poor gas milage, rotten egg smells, etc.)... From what I've been reading, the light appears to be a gimick to get you back in the LR shop after warranty.

Bluesman:

I am the third owner and I think the key is that we all were (are) pretty good about regular oil & fluid changes. The truck has had no major work done on it, still original powertrain. Oil and filters are cheap, so I change on a regular basis.

Hey Guys

Not that this is the solution but somehow it worked for me. The service light came on day and I spoke to a LR mechanic (offhours) and he said only they can reset it (so did alot of other people). Ofcourse I didn't want to pay for just the reset of that light, especially after getting a major tune up not even 3 weeks before that. Anyway one day i drove it to the shores (about 200 miles to and back) and the light turned right off. I guess i got lucky! I know this is not a solution but "hey u never know".

Here's what you do for the red service light....

You will need to find your "Emission Maintainance Reminder" thingy box. It is labelled as so with PRC 7038 and TRW on the side. It is often found under the glove box with all the other electrical crap - lift out of its place. For my D1 it was under my passenger's seat by the code display screen.

Anyway, on the top of the EMR there is a little Land Rover sticker covering a small hole. Poke around the sticker to pierce through the hole if its still covered. The special "dealer supplied tool" that is needed is a mere paper clip!! Unravel and crimp part of the paper clip to about 3/8" thick. Inside the EMR there are 2 contacts that need to be bridged inorder to reset the light (which happen to be 3/8" apart) - so carefully stick the paperclip in the hole so it touches both the contacts. (I believe that ignition power needs to be on). This should reset the light. If the EMR ever needs to be replaced your gonna pay the dealer wazoo $$ for it!!
