Had to get it towed to a garage as I was away from home. How much should a new one, installed, cost? I have 95k on the truck...should it go about now? Anything else I should consider replacing at the same time? This an indication of anything else other than it was time for the pump to go?

Mark

Replaced mine in my '95 a few weeks ago. Prepare yourself for a bit of a shock......the pump for the serpentine belted models (single fan belt, which I assume is yours) is a hell of a lot dearer than the earlier multi belted motors. I can't give you an estimate, because I hail from Oz; however I think a new thermostat (not much money), plus a proper radiator cleanout (again, not much money)would be a good move. After my pump went west I had a few temperature problems probably caused by rust and shale being freed into the system. The radiator cleanout fixed that one without any problems.

Good luck

GD

The parts from Atlantic British are 154.95 for the pump (184.95 genuine L/R). I think the belt should run around $35. while you're at it, chek your top and bottom radiator hoses. The top hose should be around $15, and the bottom around $35.

2 hours labor should be more than adequate

Do it yourself. Its about 3 hrs work and a lot easier than you think. You can also replace the thermostat, hoses and belt while your at it. If you let a shop or dealer do it, they usually charge for each individual component independantly. For example, they will charge you the full amount for replacing the belt (hours to remove and refit + cost of belt) even though the belt has to be removed to replace the water pump anyway. You can do the whole thing yourself for under $200. I did, and I was greatly relieved to see how easy it was.

Also, forgot to mention, as for price, my BMW had it's water pump replaced by the dealer (pump was only $50) and they managed to scam me for $515. That was only for the pump and thermostat. They wanted an additional $130 for the two belts but I told them to stuff it. I know this wont be the same for a Rover, but I doubt a Rover is less expensive.

Its pretty easy to do yourself. The hardest parts are getting the clutch fan off and scraping off the old gasket. Mine seemed to be crazy glued on. Good luck.

Performanceproducts.com sells a brand new pump that has been working fine in my 96 for right at a $100, the belt I bought from Advance for about $35.
