Loud grinding noise coming from the rear diff. The fluid was low when i checked it. Just wondering if there were any suggestions before i bright it into the Landrover dealership for cost estimate. And was there anything that i could do before i bring it in. They fluid was pretty low when i did check it. The noise happened and then i checked the fluid level. The pinion seal is leaking, so i guess thats where the fluid went.
Thanks any help would be great......

I guess it all depends if it is under warranty. If it is, then I would definitely fill to the plug with some 75W-90 before you go in.

If it is not under warranty then go to step one anyways :-)

and if still bad and cranky, you can buy a new one in the third member for 399.99 from bill at great basin rovers, Good luck!
Peter.

Don't bother with the dealer unless it is warranty - the rear is an easy job to R&R (assuming a D1 here)

How is that pinion seal replaced? I couldn't get the old one out for fear of causing more damage and uncertainty about how to press the new one in.

Depending on whether you have a rotoflex or a u-joint - (u-joint is easier):

>remove rear of DS
>remove pinion flange (large nut)
>pull out old seal
>reinstall new seal to same depth by gently tapping it in place (assuming you don't have a nifty seal driver)
>refit all the goodies - torque to spec

Make sure it is the seal that is bad and not a blocked axle breather tube or fitting.

Thanks, Bill. I've got a U-Joint (now). Can the old seal be levered out with a large screw driver or does it take more finess?

Yes I do have a disco 1. ANd no i dont have a u joint. Its a 96 and its not under warranty. SO chances are that i need a whole new one? You dont usually replace certain parts in there?
Thanks
Sean

Sean, You can replaced parts internal to the diff if they're damaged. Not something I would mess with. Beyond my abilities. If you refill to the plug, does it quiet down? If so, you may only need to replaced the pinion seal, or as Bill suggested, verify that the breather tube is not blocked. Since you have a roto-flex, look in the tech section at the roto-to-u-joint conversion. Good pics. The most difficult part to remove was the centering peg. I had to get help with that, and it took heat from a torch to break it loose.

Tom, you can get a seal puller from sears for the job - only about $8-10 - nice tool to have around anyway. But yes, gently with a screwdriver will work also.

Sean - sorry - was answering Tom. What color is oil when you drain it - is it full of silver? If so, that's the beginning of the end. For a stock replacement 3rd member talk to Bill at GBR - he'll take yours in exchange.

It sounds to me like a bad pinion bearing/race. You will need to take to pinion gear into a machine shop to have the bearing pressed off and the new one on. Also make sure you get a new pinion nut, once they are removed they are no good.

Monkey,

If you only checked the fluid level you tightened too much the plug. Only that.
It is grinding the differential crown!

Eduardo,

I don't think you can tighten the plug too much. I have never heard the plug causing a grinding sound. There is something else going on.

Can a blocked breather tube cause noise? I have never heard that before but I would be very happy if my noise problem could be solved that easily.

Hi Brian
Blocked breathers usually cause oil seals to fail, as pressure builds up and has to go somewhere.

Sean, you may want to try and isolate the noise before you begin to dig-into the rear. Place the rig on 4 stands, put it in gear and listen. Hopefully you can isolate the issue instead of replacing parts until the noise disappears. I usally try this when I have driveline issues but some require full driveline pressures before they give themselves-up and hoisted off the floor they conceal themselves.
Just a thought.
BTW, trying jackstands while in gear, have someone inside the rig to hit the brakes in case something happens.
Good luck.

hey land rover people.
Wasnt the diff. It was the right side stub axle. somethings collaped and the abs wheel let go and rub up against the abs sensor. So i need to replace both. But how long can i let this go. The abs wheel is expensive. Any ideas?
