I have a steering shimmy that occurrs at 73-74ish mph. This usually occurrs on the freeway while going into a curve of any type i.e. long or tight. The steering wheel actually shimmys in my hands and you can physically see the shimmy in the steering wheel. I've ordered a new OME steering damper from EE as I figured that my stock one is toast after 63k. The tires have been balanced as well. I've done a search and I may need the shims adjusted. Could the steering damper be the normal culprit or common culprit? Thanks

a good test for your steering dampener is to take it over some nice potholes. if you get some nice wobble that is a good indication it needs replacing. check to see if it is leaking as well.

If I hit bumps or holes I do get a shimmy. It's just really noticeable in curves.

I had some of the same problems around the same speeds, my LR was also experiencing the "lean" to the right. I replaced the spring and shock with original and that took care of it.

It seems that a sterring dampner would only be a band aid for this. What causes the problem? The steering dampner would only take it away from the steering wheel won't it? But the shimmy would still be there right?

Check your steering shaft u-joint, it may be loose or worn.

For a shimmy at that speed I would be looking closely at the tyres. Try swapping fronts to rear before you spend money on parts.
