ok it goes like this, about a year ago overheating , flushed rad changed thermostat, new temp sensor. drove ok but allways read cooler than half way, ok . but seemed to be loosing fluid from expansion tank,!!! recently thought maybe pressure cap or expansion tank worn, temp by the way ok since another temp sensor but still seems to be to much pressure !!!! slight overflows after long drive but temp never gets above 3/4, so to see if it would cure the problem crimped over the lugs a bit on the expanson tank cap, helps a bit but. and here is the main worry, because temp ok and still to much press. is this a sign of impending head gasket failure ? is it just a small leak into water system across gaskets or am i missing something ? 3.5 v8 on carbs, system cap rated at 15 p.s.i. only other one i can find is 13 p.s.i. rated , so by fitting that or another 15 p.s.i. cap (uncrimped) i would loose more water. |

Colin, is it only leaking at the cap, Mine leaked at the seam, where it appears the tank has been "glued" together... But it was overboiling only because my radiator was clogged. after replacing my expansion tank and having the original radiator bored out, reamed and cleaned my problems were over. You seem to be describing a pressure issue and it seems like the same problem I had... If your flow is hampered at the radiator level you would expect an increased pressure at the expansion tank. check out your radiator again. Keep us posted. -ryan |

ryan yes only seems to be leaking at the cap, might take the rad out and get it cleaned out proffesionaly , another one on the many jobs to do list !, i am just hoping it isnt head gaskets, guess will start at the easier options first, again, and hope for the best thanks |

colin all i know about the head gaskets is that if they go out 2-3 things will happen: 1. Difficulty in starting 2. white exhaust 3. chronic overheating with corresponding boil-over. 4. you cuss alot keep us posted |

Just a suggestion, but run disco till hot and use a hand held laser temp gun to check temp. Just to make sure gauge is working right. It also never hurts to change the Radiator Cap. |
