thats the route i am planning to go ,just bought a lpg kit on ebay. £450 guess with fitting another £400 and i should get money back after 3000-4000 miles petrol here 80p/litre lpg 35p/litre. expensive toys disco`s anyway putting a 60 litre tank in the rear load area and keeping same petrol tank. ok so i loose carrying capacity but i can always remove rear seats or fold them down as never use anyway. some people put twin tanks on chassis rails , or replace petrol tank with gas tank and put in a smaller petrol tank , but i prefered to have the standard fuel tank in situ. will see how it goes when i finally get someone to fit it.

Here in Oz we have (as you do in the UK) a number of LPG Discoveries. My "95 has a 68 litre twin torpedo tank in place of the petrol tank, with an auxiliary 40 litre petrol tank beside it. Power loss is barely noticeable at all, the unit runs smoother and sweeter than on petrol, and when it comes to oil change time, the oil is barely discoloured.
In Oz dollars, it costs $8.50 per 100kms to run on LPG, compared to $12.50 on petrol. Motors tend to last longer as well, mine is ticking along beautifully at 300000 kms.

Cheers

GD
You won't regret the conversion.

Actually I was looking for an Australian site when I stumbled across the UK site.
My 93 Dico 1 has 230000 Kms on the clock, I would like to know if my Engine would be suited to a conversion.

Hi I have LPG only on my 93 discovery (has been since 150,000 kms) the owner I bought from (family) have run it so much on LPG that the original fuel tank rusted and was probibitivly costly to replace including injectors etc that I am happily running solely on LPG now 280,000kms with no trouble.
Just my case history.
Cheers,
Anton

Found a great local W/site for Gas Conversions
http://www.mewsauto.com.au/ Perth West Australia.
Had a chat on the phone with them and they where most helpfull.
Converting to Gas will be cheaper than up grading to another Disco.
And I will double (+)the life of the Disco I have now.
So, way to go"

Graeme - me too; identical set up. I put a Joker (made in Italy like most LPG stuff) on the thing to intercept and trick the coil into firing differently, such that timing is advanced about 13 degrees when revs rise above 1200 rpm - made a huge difference for very little outlay. Its actually smoother on Gas, and no power differnce. It actually has more useable torque (due to slower burn).

Cheers mate

Michael - Liquid Petrolium Gas (propane/butane mix).

It is a Gas that is stored in a steel (or stainless steel) tank under pressure and fed into the engine bay via brass tubing. It then passes through a convertor which changes it from a gas to a liquid. It is then fed into the engine via a mixer (carby relly) into the intake plenum chamber. It is very very clean compared to petrol. It has a much higher octane than even premium petrol and burns slower (more like, but no where near a diesel). You can do 6000 miles, pull out the dip stick and the oil is the same transparant honey colour as when you put it in - quite literally.

On start up in an EFI vehicle the vehicle automatically starts on petrol and then pretty much immediately activates a solenoid to open the LPG entry to the intake and closes off fuel injection simultanously - the result is that, with it set up properly, if you see a hicup on the tacho then your doing well when it changes over.

You have to tune it properly, and use the correct leads and plugs, but the result is fantastic. Even though the catalytic convertors are there, they are not required on LPG. What comes out the arse of the vehicle is exceptionally clean and harmless.

The best part is that it costs less than half the cost of fuel, and when properly tuned the consumption is about the same (you can now get gas injected systems that had a "mixer" taped directly into each cylinder - and that is the bees fucking knees, but I am very happy with my more basic setup, for far less cost).

In Oz taxi cabs run LPG all the time. So do many buses. What is interesting is that when properly set up in a diesel motor, LPG gives big increases in horses!

Cheers All

The more I read about the benefits of LPG the more I wonder why I have taken so long to jump on the LPG wagon.

Just be careful - I have heard (cant verify yet) that in 2008 the Fed Govt will apply a full excise to LPG in Aust bringing it in line with unleaded.
