Re: D2 breather lines. Ok looking at the transmission and transfer box, there are two breather tubes headed up to the firewall at the back of the engine compartment. One of them ends in a U-turn and is open. The other one appears to U-turn and then head all the way back down to the transfer box and end right there open, just above the transfer box. I'm trying to make sense of this. Its near impossible for me to trace which one is which. I assume the transmision breather heads up to the open U-bend in the firewall, and that the one that returns is the transfer case breather, which is smaller and less likely to suck in water because of the smaller internal volume. Any help would be very much appreciated. Dean |

Strange. Both should end in a U. One is for the t-case and the other is for the front axle. The rear axle is the one to watch out for and should be extended. Dealers were doing this at no charge a while back if you asked them to do it. |

Al, There's another U-tube ending on the left (drivers) side, that's the front diff breather. I'm not talking about that one. Looking in the shop manual and underneath, both the transmission AND the transfer case have breather tubes, and they are bunched together as described above, one of them apearing to return and end near the t-case. UPDATE: Even more confusing. I have from a reliable source been informed that the transmission breather doubles back as described, and ends up just above the transmission itself. Does anyone have an idea why this would be done? The only thing I can think of is that if the fluid boiled out of the transmission, it would just pour out under the vehicle, and not cover the whole engine compartment. But its kinda dumb to put the breather back down low! Dean |
