I know a few people have mounted roof lights to the rack, where did they run the wires down? I'd like to install lights, but i don't want to drill into the roof so whats the best place to run them, is there a secret spot I'm not awhere of?

Mark,

I ran mine under the plastic cover on the right side of the windsheild. If I had a camera, I would send you pics.

I don't know what the factory rack looks like on the discoII, but that's what I went through on mine. Basically drop your visors inside and get to the nut that holds the factory rack on. Remove it and drill a hole so that it can't be seen when the factory rack is put back on. Next, take a round file and file enough away from the factory rack where you are going to run the wires through. Do this so the wires don't get pinched. Before tightening down the factory rack, fill the area with silicone under the rack. If some comes out when you tighten it down you can clean it off with a cloth or wait unitl it's dry and cut it with a razor. I also added a watertight quick connect plug so I can remove the rack without taking the lights off. The install is hidden and has never leaked. If you want i'll send you some pics.

You could ask Greg Parrish (if you want to spend several years installing the lights). He did an amazing job.

Mark,

Run the wires down beneath the front window post rubber seal. If you wet it with soapy water you will be able to slide the wires in very easily.

Steve,
Where did you get those connectors in the picture you posted? That is exactly what I've been looking for.

Greg,

I got the connectors from Pep Boy's. They aren't super cheap but are a great product and haven't failed me yet. It's a great way to disconnect my rack without taking my lights off.

Thanks Steve,

My original install was the old way of running wires down under the PS A-Pillar fairing. This winter I need to take everything apart to repaint and mount a floor to the rack. So that will be a good time.

Would you mind sending some pics my way? Here's my email address. What kind of lights are you using and what's the model number on the plug?

Paul,

I would think long and hard about drilling holes in the roof and filling with silicone............ Just asking for problems and future leaks in my opinion.

Thanks for the link to the old thread Al. I had forgotten about those pic's I posted of my install. Brings back some old memories from last year in Philly.

Thanks for the kind words Alyssa. :-)

Greg,

If you think about it, there are already plenty of holes in your roof. 4 alone in the factory rack. Not to mention the big holes called moon roofs, which I think everybody knows that there is a possibility for those to leak. All I did was drill a hole under the factory rack and filled in the area under the rack. Honestly you don't even need to that. Land rover doesn't put silicone around their holes. They use a gasket which I don't remove, just make it better. I would tell everybody in the Land Rover community that it's alright to do this. I did the same thing with a K-40 CB antenna on my Dodge Dakota. Never a leak. It's not the end of the world. I say "DO IT". Besides it looks a hell of a lot better than wires all over the place.
