My CDL/Transfer case was been making knocking noises then it would go quiet. This afternoon it make some really loud knocking, and grinding noises and now it sounds like a combination between a fire truck siren and a Ferrari F1 car. I don’t think it's the transmission it does not slip and shifts through the gears ok. It looks like pulling it out is nuts and bolts. Is it easy to install a new one, and what are my options, can I get a rebuilt one or is it cheaper to have my unit repaired. I live in San Francisco if anyone has a good local resource or an extra CDL/transfer case lying around. I have a 1995 Disco with 79,000 miles.

The diff lock is in the front housing of the box, you can remove this in the car and have a look what is wrong.

Are you on the mendo-recce e-mail list? Or a member of the NCRC (Northern Calif, Rover Club)?
The mendo list is very good for local, Northern Calif. info.

I'll get back to you in awhile. Let me search around.
