Hi, I was wondering if someone could tell me how I can tell the difference between a 200 and 300 series. Is it an age difference?

Thanks

200 TDi engine was introduced the same time the Disco came out ~'89. The 300Tdi is a revised version, that came out ~'96. So, '95 and earlier "should" be a 200 where '96-on should be a 300... (realize, I'm in the US and we don't have 'em here, so I could be off by a year or so on the transition).

FWIW....

That's about right. The 200Tdi and 300Tdi are basically the same engine, but the 300 has got electronic (computerised?) fuel mangement,(and a few minor differences e.g.air filter) whereas the 200 is still entirely mechanical. The 300 is supposed to be a bit more powerful and quieter than the 200, but you'd be hard pressed to tell by the time you've got some decent tyres on. he interior of the 200's is the original Conran design, and 300's had some other minor cosmetic changes to the bumpers, lights, radiator grill and mirrors.

Also, 300's had anti-roll bars fitted as standard.

Hi Alan
I have a 300Tdi, and am curious to know exactly where the ECU is?
I think you will find the 300 Tdi is essentially the same as a 200Tdi just a lot quiter and without cambelt problems, a well tuned 200 will wipe the floor with a rough 300. things that are different are air filters and minor bits and pieces.

Not all 300Tdi's have electronic engine management, and thé cambelt problem was on early 300Tdi's, not on 200 Tdi's. 200's had antiswaybars from 93 or so.

300Tdi versus 200Tdi
Rectangular airfilter box vsus tubular airfilter box
big mirrors vsus small mirrors
big lights without surround vsus small lights with surrounds
three knobs each side of the binacle vsus two knobs each side of the binacle
lights in the rear bumper vsus no lights in the rear bumper
...

Hi Rob
Almost all 300Tdi`s up to early 98 had cambelt issues, And I am sure no 300 had an ECU.

Guys the model change over is around june 94 from 200 to 300. 5 speed box changed at the same time from LT77 to R380(still used). 300s have belt problems until 98 but you can retro fit the early ones. The 300's are a bit quieter due sound deadening in the rocker cover and engine cover.

So if looking for a 98 disco, late 98 would be the way to go?

Hi
All D1`s built in 98 were the best of the bunch IMO, was LR`s best year, quality control was starting to work. valuable lessons were learnt from the Germans.

Peter,

The EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) unit is, according to my Haynes Manual, "located behind behind the right-hand 'A' pillar trim panel. I can't confirm this as mine is a 200. Also on the EDC system is an array of sensors, including throttle position sensor, Tubo boost pressure sensor, coolant temp sensor EGR, air temp sensors, air flow sensor and so on. It is a real "drive by wire" system, as there is no mechanical link between the accelorator pedal and the fuel injection pump. The EDC wasn't for all markets, but is is on UK

Hi Alan
I have a Aug 98 UK commercial 300Tdi and mine is not drive by wire, mine has a cable between the fuel injection pump and the pedal. but you are right some models must be. But it proves not all UK 300Tdi`s were.

Hello
Why hasnīt anybody mentioned the obvious and that is the 300 has a one piece serpentine belt as opposed to seperate belts for the 200.
Have driven both and as Alan said canīt really tell the difference. By the way Pete after the expensive birthdy present to myself I now have a well tuned 200. See you on the 17th.
