I am at the point now where I need to get new catalytic converters, however I'm not excited about paying $800 either (seeing as I just got a new engine). I was going to try and get a hold of some used ones....but it's against the law! So I called Nathan at xks and here is an option he told me: I could purchase some after market cat converters for around $150-$200 (from summit racing for example) and weld them on, and it would work and pass inspection. Has anyone heard of this procedure being done? Pro's, Con's? |

Stephen, lots of people do this. You should check the archives, where you should find a bunch of information. You will be completely fine doing this. I see that you have a 1996 Discovery. Does it have over 80k miles? If not, it is still under the federal emissions warranty, and you can get them replaced for free. |

The car has 115k miles, however the new engine I just had installed has 8k miles, the cats on there right now are the original ones. Thanks for the input, i'll check out the archives |

>>>what are the signs telling you the cats are bad? I have some funny sounds I think are coming from my cats<<< Typically the number one way to tell the cats are bad would be a heavy sulfer smell/rotten eggs. Your cats will make ticking noises in normal operation as they cool. |

I bought 2 catalytic converters from Summit Racing for 55 dollars each. They got here in about 3 days. I then took them to a local muffler shop, whom I paid $110 to for them to install the cats. Not too bad, considering they have to completly disconnect the Y pipe from the exhaust manifolds, weld the new ones back in, and dispose of the old ones. I also had them cut off the resonator on the back and weld in a down-pipe. So, all in all it was about 230 bucks. It used to sound like a tank .. and now it doesnt
