When should I bring in my 03 Disco for its first service - 8000, 10,000, 12,000 miles???? Or is it not in miles, but in how many months you have had it? This is for an 03 Disco in the United States. Thanks.

personally I would change my oil every 3K. Easy to do and let them do the major ones - 30K and 60K-if you don't feel like it.

Bluesman:Service is free on an '03 Discovery, so he would be foolish not to take it to the dealer.
Michael:Your service intervals are every 6 months or every 7500 miles. If you plan to keep your vehicle for a long time, you could do extra oil changes in between services (but those would not be free). Your owner's manual has a booklet called "Passport to Service" that has a place for the dealer to stamp when the service is complete. You should leave that booklet on the seat when you go in so that they can stamp it. If you try to resell your car, it is beneficial to have your book stamped.

Ah yes, forgot service was included. Definitely take it to them.

If you are remotely mechanically inclined i would change your own oil and brake pads. Dealers charge way too much for these items you can easily do yourself. Plus you won't have to wait two weeks to get in there.

No offense Alyssa but I think there are many things the dealers overcharge for - $40 for wiper blades for example. $450 for brake pad change -
$150 for oil changes. Some things I don't mind paying for because they have the skills and tools but the little things.....

I would also recommend having an extra oil change done in between since 7500 miles is a bit of a stretch on conventional oil if you do any type of servere service driving at all. I am having my 7500 mile service done at 3750 miles on my 03 Disco so that I can get all of the fluids in the diffs and engine changed to a synthetic, then will do the services every 7500 miles afterwards.

Bluesman, as far as I know dealers have a monopoly on wiper blades. If he doesn't get them from a dealer, is he just going to go without? The oil changes are free, included, no charge, etc... (and even if you WERE paying, they are only $49.95, and that includes a loaner and a service wash). AND, our wait time is 2-3 days, not 2 weeks.

Alyssa,

So which dealership do you work for? 49.95 is a great deal esp if the wash and loaner is included. Let's do the math though -

wait time 2 days @ $17/day for loaner (in Atlanta they give you a loaner through a rental car agency which they pay for only if you bought the car from them) - you misread my previous message -
you have to wait two weeks to take it IN not for the service itself..anyway $34

materials 6 quarts dino oil @ 1.50 = $6 + filter ($6?) = $12

wash = whatever - $5

So....total is $51 cost and i am not even costing in labor etc - maybe the dealership is doing it for free???? doubt it

- i am not someone who views profit as evil and do not believe people should work for free - I do however HATE being ripped off! - dealership or independent ..... so how does your dealership make up for this lost revenue?

Since i am a transfer my dealership has given me a loaner at the service but that ends @ 50K.

I see some value in dealership work when it comes to specialized repairs but the little things......

Micheal,

do yourself a favor and learn how to change your own oil and brake pads. Its quicker, you learn more about your truck and save some cash for all the accessories you will want. People here are always glad to answer questions. Obviously take your truck in for the maintenance while it is covered. They will also be able to fix some of the problems under warranty as well.

Oh yea, the wiper blades - just use a pair of needle nose pilers and barely pry open the metal brackets holding the blades - go into any autoparts store and buy the replacement blades - insert and push back together - cost is $4.

my math was off by $2 - $8 for the oil not $6 - big deal - total $53

We don't charge for loaners, and you get a Land Rover from us, so right there is the flaw in your math. No, if you didn't buy it from us, you might not get a loaner. But if you moved into the area, you will.
...and I did NOT misread your message. When you call to get an appointment, you should be in within 2-3 days. The length you are in depends on what you are having done. If it's just an oil change, you can wait if you want, or it will be done that day.
Bluesman, it sounds like you're not to happy with YOUR dealer. Don't sour the newbie with your bad experience.

Actually Alyssa I have had a GOOD experience with my dealership but that doesn't mean I should pay more when I don't have to! If you look at all the posts here there are numerous complaints about dealers overcharging. That is my only point!

For $50 and a loaner i would gladly take it in and let them do the oil change but not the case here and I moved here after buying the truck.

So, fair enough, Michael judge for yourself while it is free. You can always ask questions here if you have concerns.

I do love my truck!!

Healthy discussion about dealer services and costs, but the thing that concerns me is that Michael has purchased a '03 Disco (probably more than $30K) and hasn't even bothered to read the manual. No wonder that there are so many posts with problems and questions as to why things break.
