I've been trying to track down a snap or popping noise from the front end of my D2. The noise happens when turning into sharp gutters with one wheel first. I've checked the usual spots panhard rod bushings, tie rod ends, balljoints, etc... but everything checks out and is solid. I did discover a certain amount of vertical movement of the main shaft in the steering box. When I push upward on the steering arm from below I can get it to move and make the snapping noise I am hearing. Is this much vertical play in the main shaft normal? Steering feels fine while going down the road without any excessive slop. What gives? |

I have the same problem with my 97 disco. Mine seems like it's coming from the front passenger side. Another friend said that if the spring isn't seated correctly then it could make the noise. I have Rovertym's 3" suspension lift, have you changed your suspension or is it stock? I'll let you know if I hear anything new, hopefully we both can solve this problem. Thanks, Matt |

Everything on the suspension is stock. The snap/popping noise seems to happen more often when the passenger side front wheel is entering a deep ditch or gutter and stress is put on the steering system. Like I said, all of the tie-rod ends and ball joints are tight. The only slop in the entire system seems to be the vertcal movement of the main shaft inside the steering box. I was thinking since the passenger side steering knuckle is attached directly to the steering box by the steering rod any backward and forward torque applied to that wheel as it travels over rough terrain could be enough to move the shaft relative to the box and cause the snapping noise. I don't know if this logic is sound but I can't see anything else loose in the suspension. |

Noises from this area are one of those things that come up from time to time (you'll find a few threads in the archives about these noises - I know, I've read them all.) Here's what fixed - or virtually fixed - these noises on my truck: Land Rover Newport Beach put their shop foreman on the problem, and he told me that this will be either the joints at either end of the sway bar or the springs not able to turn in their mounts. On my truck, some spray heavy lubricant at the top and bottom of each spring seemed to be enough (LRNB even sent me home with a can of the stuff.) It seems my springs were a bit rusty and were binding at the top. They're actually not clamped down and are supposed to move a bit. All I know is that the noise was making me crazy, and now I'm not crazy anymore. Land Rover Newport, unlike the other two dealers I'd been to, has my thanks. Your problem may be different, since you can reproduce the noise by pushing on the steering linkage, but I thought I'd kick something in here anyway. |
