Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I've been reading the board about "exhaust systems" (I thought I wanted a Borla, but now I'm concerned that it may be too loud). Some on recently mentioned Flowmaster mufflers. I checked the site and they look cool as well. My question: what is the difference between an "exhaust system" like Borla and a new "muffler" like a Flowmaster? Cost, capability, endurance, performance. My current "muffler" was severely creased by the former owner...but the pipes look all right, but independant LR mechanic suggested the Borla. Your thoughts are appreciated!

the Borla is an "after cat-back system" meaning that everything from after the catalytic converter to the tail pipe is completely replaced. Flowmaster makes "systems" like this as well, but what people are referring to on this site is actually just a replacement muffler. If you are worried about damage to your muffler, you can buy a "replacement muffler" and not a "system" such as a flowmaster or dynomax. If you want to replace the exhaust system from the catalytic converter back, than a complete kit might be the way to go. Issues like cost are huge, as the borla "system" is very expensive but buying a flowmaster ($50-$100) muffler and then having it installed is relatively inexpensive. The Borla "system" is T304 stainless steel and will resist corosion and breakdown like many stock exhaust kits experience. As the Land Rover in stock trim is a dog, the gains from a Borla kit would be minimal and not worth the cost. Another thought is to recreate a "system" from desired pieces ( buy the muffler and tip(s) that you want) then replace all the factory piping with new stuff from the exhaust shop. The choices are abundant when taking this route, yet the performance gains are nil. In the end, its up to you.

You also have to remember that the Borla exhaust system is made of using Mandrel bends while any exhaust piping that you'll have a muffler shop make up with be crush bent. Mandrel bends keep an even diameter throughout the bend while in a crush bend, not only is the inside diameter uneven, but there are often "kinks" in the bend that also cause further restriction. Of course, you didn't buy a Discovery for it's 0-60 performance, so in the end it's up to you. The Borla exhaust system is expensive, but it's made of aircraft grade T304 which is very corrosion resistent. The Borla system is also a very well designed piece and will fit right in just like the factory piping fit. As far as noise is concerned, Borla exhaust systems will be slightly louder than stock, but it will actually sound almost like stock, while providing you with one of the best exhaust melodies that of any exhaust system. The Borla costs a bit, but it really is a high quality piece of work. I have had them on nearly every vehicle i've ever owned and I have to say if you are concerned with noise, don't worry about it as it will sound almost factory, with the exception of the exhaust note being much more beautiful.

June,
Good call on the exhaust note, though my only point was that the Borla kit was not necessary in this application. Crimped welds vs. mandrel bent welds is irrelevant as this is not a performance issue. The difference between what a Borla bolt on kit and a local muffler shop job on a Disco application is minimal, maybe equaling 1 or 2 hp/tq. not to mention probably cheaper. Once again, there are always choices and some people's "beautiful" noise can be someone else's pain in the ear.

p.s. I would go borla but I want dual exit, not single.

something i did a few years back
http://www.discoweb.org/flowmaster.htm

if your pipes are still good, just have the old muffler cut out, and replace the rear resonator with a straight pipe.

if you want a Borla, try Summit Racing. i believe that people were getting them for the Disco for somewhere around $400

Whlie we are on this subject, does anyone have any sound clips of the Borla exhaust on the Discovery? I don't think they are out yet for the 03 Disco's, but i'd like to hear how the older 4.0 litre V8 based Disco's sound with it.
