Sorry for the dump questions(only Discoweb members can understand me), but is black out hood decal the black paint/decal on the rised part of the front hood that some discoveries have? Is it a special paint or a hood decal? Where can I get it? Does it come off with no problems or does it leave adhessive marks and regrets? And what's the main purpose for that, looks or something with the light glare?

John

John - you can do it both ways. Some here have painted the raised portion of the hood you're talking about and others have gone the decal route. The above link Jim points to is one source and I know that any 3M distributors can do it too.

I can't see the decal lasting that long being black and always in the sun, it will eventually dry out, crack and start peeling as all decals eventually do. Have it painted!

Thanks Ron, makes sense!
Any body shop would be good for this right!
Any specific paint or color name (black no shine)

I took mine to my local body shop and gave them a picture (speaks a thousand words) and said flat black no clear coat. Paid 70 bucks and boom my hoods blacked out, simple as that.

Good idea to use paint. The genuine LR stickers cost nearly $200, and you have to give them your VIN to prove you have a Kalahari.

Most dealerships I have spoke with (the body shop) will order one for you and they cost no more than 100.00 dollars. I have an XD but I know of others who have gotten one fine, they just have to enter the part code as one for an XD or kalahari. Only problem is, the guys who try to put the decal on struggle big time trying to put it on correctly without bubbles or anything, that is if it is even sent to them without wrinkles (it took five to get the an unwrinkled one from Land Rover). The sticker is obviously less permanent and I believe will look better especially when your black hood paint and the rest of the vehicle color is oxidizing at different rates. That is only my opinion though, I'm sure people have had lots of luck using paint on their hoods. Good luck.

The best option for painting the hood is to ask for "Lusterless" finish, it is not a flat but more of a "Dull" finish that cleans well. significantly more durable than flat.

Go with paint. BW showed me his after a trip wheeling with him, and as he said, it was the best and cheapest mod he made to his truck. I did it and i couldnt agree more. The decals peel. Or rather, they will have a tendency to as opposed to paint if its done right.

just my pennys worth.

Flat paint will be extremely durable if applied properly and provides anti-glare for sun and oncoming lights. No need for lusterless or anything fancy. Just mask it, sand it, prime it and use some krylon rustolium or what have you. If you are using spray cans you can take the hood off to avoid all drips.
