From what i understand adding a snorkel helps out the gas mileage quite a bit, having the raised air intake on a dust road draws in cleaner air, and adding a snorkel looks cool as shit! www.rocky-road.com has the best price on a snorkel that i've seen. I'm looking to get one here pretty soon.

Personally I didn't notice any improvement in power or mileage, so I think you're gonna have to drive around the entire earth several times before it pays for itself, if that's the reason you install one.

My safari snorkle will be installed next week. I did not ask about mileage, but I did ask the following:

Will adding it cause problems in any other areas? NO

Will adding it keep my warranty intact? YES

It defenitely will improve overall efficiency. After popping in the thread about mpg on Discos, I suppose getting better mileage would be great. I had no clue that I got such terrible miles per gallon, since a tank of gas usually lasts me almost 2 months.

BTW, snorkle arrived in humongous box. I opened it a few days ago, and all that was in it was a tiny box of parts and a big plastic tube that resembled little tykes construction.

I have a question, I have seen the top of snorkles facing forward and also facing rearward. Does anyone know which of those is the right way??

Jaime,

If it swivels, face it forward unless its raining heavily. The Mantec faces backwards and is fixed that way.

So it is a good idea to turn the snorkel around if it rains almost every afternoon in the summer months? How much rain it needed to ruin the MAF and/or the throttle body.

I'm wondering about water getting inside too.

When I read about how snorkel functions during operation, water should be burned away before it has a chance to go down to engine -- but, what happens when rover is sitting unattended for longer periods outside??

We're in the midst of a few days of solid rain. When the heavier cells pass over, the rain is coming down sideways - and it is not from a consistent direction.

Hypothetically, if lots of rain goes down the snorkel, what is the worst that will happen??

Thanks, Jamie

Ok on some rovers there are small drain holes in the air filter box, which should deal with any small influx of water. These are not on my D2 however.

But don't worry about it, its gonna suck through a million cubic feet of air when you start up and dry anything anyway. The air intakes of some vehicles face forward to the rain anyway.

Just watch out when you clean the disco, its easy to forget and hose into the opening!

My snorkeled, cammed and chipped 4.6liter 94 Disco usually gets 11-12 mpg with it fully loaded

Thanks guys,
But sometimes the rain hits and it's pouring, should you stop and turn it around backwards. Is it gonna cause damage if you keep on driving? Will enough rain be able to come in through the forward facing head to mess up the MAF and/or the throttle body.
